19 inch wheels on 2005 6MT
Re: 19 inch wheels on 2005 6MT
"the 05 19" are forged, the 03/04 18" are cast iron. they shouldn't weigh more & may even weigh less (forged = stronger & lighter than cast iron)."
J_P, where is the source on this? Your statement about the wheels being made of iron makes me wonder where you got your information about cast vs. forged in the first place. I've looked high and low for this kind of info and haven't found any yet.
If they are indeed the same weight, then I could possibly be convinced into keeping them...hmmm....but at the end of the day, I'd still rather have 18 inchers (less rotational inertia all things being equal, cheaper tires, better ride, slightly less prone to damage).

Re: 19 inch wheels on 2005 6MT
Moog, are you saying that 19" tires weigh more than 18" tires. Or are you saying that your 19" tires in particular are heavier?
Heavier tires have more of an impact on acceleration and braking since they have more of an effect on rotational inertia than do the wheels. If you want to know why, the reason is because as objects move away from the spinning axis (center of tire/wheel assembly) they have a greater effect on the total rotational inertia (proportional to mass times radius squared).
Anyway, Moog, can you elaborate?

Are these pictures right?!?!
I found this on another post...

Do those look like 19 inchers to you? Are they the current 17 inch wheels? Typo?

ximer must be one pissed-off dude. what happened bro? you were once a cool forum member. the original poster's title refers to that fact that the post is about "19 inch wheels". he didn't post a title like "pics of 19 inch wheels..come look!!! : )"
just chill dude...we're all g35 bros here : )

Re: 19 inch wheels on 2005 6MT
I heard the 19" wheels are going to be forged by Rays and be a style similar to the new Progressiv spoke (split 5 spoke style, silver with a polished lip) - just rumors, so no flaming...
BTW, I love my car and there is nothing that would make me change my mind - I don't care what they do to the '05, if they don't slap F/I on it, I'm not impressed...

bxabodyn,
you don't know what you're talking about. why you posting up rumors and conjecture!!! j/k lol
if that rumor is true....SWEET!!!! i like those rims. great news even if they are rumors. i rather hear rumors than no news at all. hey, before the official 2005 coupe news release, ppl were flaming those members for posting up the rumors of the changes. it's all good to me : )

"it's not cast iron, it's cast aluminum"
lol, i was thinking about engines when i typed cast iron. yes, the wheels are obviously cast aluminum, but the rest of my post still stands. forged is stronger & lighter than cast

Re: 19 inch wheels on 2005 6MT
bzabodyn, cool rumor. Where do you get this stuff? If it's true, then it stands to reason that there might be a price increase for the 2005 (rumor has it at maybe $800). The 2004 is expensive as is, I may just pull the trigger on the 2004. I like 7 spokes. 6 is pretty good too. I don't in general like 5 spoke designs as much, so more reason to go 2004 for me.
Z2G, thanks for the support. I'm thinking what the heck, what did I say?! Thanks for affirming my sanity

rumors = inside source...
the "base price" will not be increased by much, but when you start looking at the package prices (ie sport package w/ 19" wheels on AT and the stock 6MT) they will be noticiably more - I'm guessing the base 6MT will increase in price by around $800-1000 due to the upgrades (which will be standard on ALL 6MT's) and the "Sport Package" for the 5AT will increase by a somewhat smaller margin - probably $600-800...
just guessing, since that's all anyone can do for the next couple months anyways....

Re: 19 inch wheels on 2005 6MT
ROTFLMAO! I find this whole "forged=lighter" pretty funny. My 17x8.5" pressure cast SSR Comps weigh almost 2 lbs less than narrower 17x8.0" forged Volk TE-37s. The design of the wheel is just as critical to its strength and weight as the material it is made from.
A good example of this is 3rd gen RX7s. Despite the fact that the 16x8.0" wheels appeared to be identical for the 3 years of production, half weighed 16 lbs and the later half weighed 18 lbs. Where the spokes met the outer rim was too thin on the earlier wheels and they developed hairline cracks. To fix the problem, 2 additional pounds of material was added to the back of the spokes. Lighter isn't always better.

As one last note, the 2001 and 2002-2004 Corvette Z06 Wheels look almost identical. The 2002-2004 wheels are lighter in color, but there is actually a much bigger difference. The 2001 wheels are forged and the 2002-2004 wheels are pressure cast. The cast wheels are 2 lbs lighter a corner.

Re: 19 inch wheels on 2005 6MT
Makes sense. Cast is less dense (lighter for the same volume) than forged. And as you also noted, the design of the wheel makes a big difference in weight, not just the material.
I'm just not liking the 19's so much because of the even greater likelihood to damaging them (via potholes and curbs?), the ride will not feel any more comfortable, and the cost of replacement tires. Am I making a mountain out of a mole hill? Are these differences subtle? You guys do make a point that they could and should make the 19's lighter than the current 18's.
