All seasons - my impressions after this winter
All seasons - my impressions after this winter
Worked beautifully on my 6MT coupe. VDC performed admirably and having a manual tranny is always a plus for snow launches. I'm currently running RE92's which came with a set of OEM 17's that I bought for the winter. Reviewers on Tirerack rate RE92's about as bad as possible for snow driving and they did just fine for me. I'll probably replace with Khumo Ecsta LX which are not only cheap but also rated twice as good as the Bridgestones in the snow.
I'll also add that I did subjective testing with and without 190lbs added in the trunk and couldn't tell the difference. Many here recommend just keeping a full tank of gas when you know snow is coming and that's what I tried to do.
I'm in South Dakota and have a 20 minute in-town drive to work. My snow experience is 12 years of front wheel drive coupe driving. I really look forward to winter and enjoy the variety of driving that snow provides (seriously it's fun
). Deciding between winter and all season rubber can be a difficult decision since all seasons are significantly cheaper, don't become useless at 50% treadlife, and don't completely lose performance when the temps rise. Different circumstances (long commute for example) will probably dictate that many of you need the superior snow stability that winters can provide. But I really wanted to contribute my experience for the countless number of people that search for winter tire threads every year.
19" OEM's are back on now for the summer and man what a difference that makes for the appearance!

I am in CT and in my first year ('04, G35 sedan, 6mt) through away the oem tires and put on 235/50/17 Avon m&s all season and they were okay at best (pretty good ratings on Tirerack). THe next winter after getting stuck twice in 3-4 inches of snow downtown where it is flat, I put on blizzaks (205/65/16) and they have been SUPER. I can go up hills better than a fwd.
