Rear tires vs Front tires

I have a g35c w/ the 18" wheels.

Yesterday I got a flat on one of my rear tires, so now I need to get some new tires.

Someone told me that the tires on the front are different from those on the rear, is that correct?

I was looking online for 245/45R18 tires, what do those numbers stand for? Clearly the 18 is inches, but what about the 245, 45, and the R?

Sorry, I'm clueless about this stuff, and trying to find a pair of tires that isn't going to cost 250 per is driving my nuts.

Re: Rear tires vs Front tires

Amazing people are allowed to buy a car without [mandantory]attending a 1 year automotive engineering and financial program. Less than 1 in a 1000 know the cost of the tires [size/performance] tire maintenance before they purchase. Yet tires and their maintenance [rotation, alignment, balancing, replacement] are usually tied with brakes as the major maintenance cost centers.

The whole 18-22" wheel size is a marketing tool/invention to get more money by creating faster wear with little if any improvements in REAL performance. Now on heavy cars/SUV [above 4,500 pounds] these larger sizes [coupled with larger 27-30" diameters] may be necessary to contain the air to support the weight. But on less than 4500 pounds the superior brake rotor sizes [12-13"] will always fit in properly designed 17" wheels.

When I waited tables it always amazed me that engineers or financial planners and Controllers weren't required to take a social skills class before being allowed to eat out.

lol.... there are some jobs that people with good social skills can do well and some that nerdy people with brains and no social skills can do.... neither make a TON of money in most cases. The extremely wealthy are always the ones with a mixture of both very good social skills and the book smarts

Re: Rear tires vs Front tires

I actually bought my car used, so I didn't have the option of not paying extra for the 18" wheels as if I were buying it new.

Anyway, if you ask those buying the 18" wheel option why they are choosing the 18" over the 17" I bet 9 out of 10 will tell you because of how they look, not because of any performance improvement. Why else would people on this board be spending tons of cash to put 20" wheels on their G35s when they could get a supercharger for less money?

Re: Rear tires vs Front tires

245/45/18 tires are going to run you 250.00 per tire after mounting and balancing almost anywhere but ebay. If you are lucky you can find some for right at 200.00

take some time tonight and READ about tire sizes. check out www.tirerack.com and read their very informative pages

also keep in mind that spending 250.00 plus for a tire may be a smart thing to do in that you will get a 6 ply instead of a 4 ply tire which will resist flats and punctures better.

personally, most of us would say "!WOOHOO! I got a flat and now I can upgrade"
