3rd piece in a 3-piece rim?
i can only think of the outer rim and the center piece. what is usually the 3rd piece?

The hoop splits in the middle. So thats two then the center makes three

Here's a ghetto rendering of the 3 different pieces. Advantages include increased flexibility in available sizes, easier to repair a single part, etc...
