Tires-any Michelin Pilot alternatives?

Since I'm sure I'll need a new set of tires before the end of the year (if not sooner) and knowing how pricey the Pilot Sports are, has anyone tried any other tires? Any cheaper recommendations? I know we don't have that many options in the 225/45/18 and 245/45/18 size, but I'm open to suggestions. Thanks!

Toyo Proxes T1S come highly recommended by two people I consider experts that have actual facts to support their opinios, one being Eagle1. They are very lightweight and performance that comes close to the Pilots.

Check out http://www.edgeracing.com for good prices.

Re: Tires-any Michelin Pilot alternatives?

When you redesign a vehicles suspension by changing tire designs, you have to understand how the performance will almost always decline. When a vehicle comes oem with top of the line Michelins, there is always the whinning about price!

Tires create 95% of handling and braking, the other components are only responsible for 5%.

How much wet braking increase is acceptable, how much after new noise is acceptable, how much lower sidewall strength is acceptable,........... how much tire vibration and misbalance will you tolerate and how quickly.

China, India, and SE Asia and Africa make some nice cheap mostly round at least in the beginning tires.......but they don't have the high speed road system we have in US.

Michelin is famous for delivering 5% more for 50% higher price, but thats the way premium goods work.

toyo t1's are VERY light also... i cant remember the site, but someone gave me a link on here to a tire store that has weights listed. in the 245/35/19 i want to say they were around 20 lb's whereas every other tire listed was around 2-5 lb's heavier. THis wasnt a very wide selection of tires listed, but they were all performance tires that would be considered good for a vehicle like ours.

The T1s in 245/245 17 are 24.5 lbs. I got the weight off of edgeracing's site.

Re: Tires-any Michelin Pilot alternatives?

i just ordered yokohama db s2's in 245/40/18 for the front and 255/45/18 for the rears. i went with these because they are wider than the stock and almost the same diameter. and they are all season, and here in nj thats a plus. i should be getting them in about 2 weeks, so i dont know if that was a good choice or not. i was about to buy either the toyo t1's or yokohama avs es100, but then decided i didnt want to go with the summer only tires. btw, i dont know a whole lot about this stuff, i was just going by what i read on the internet and what friends told me.

Re: Tires-any Michelin Pilot alternatives?

Like 03G35Black, I just recently [as in yesterday] got a set of Yokohama AVS db S2's 245/40R18's installed on my 6MT sedan. I have not had a chance to drive it around that much yet, but my initial impression is that these are quality tires. They definately seem better than my stock Goodyear GS-D's...

Re: Tires-any Michelin Pilot alternatives?

"I love my new Michelin PS2's...." SMART MAN!
Now you can rotate them easier and the cost of ownership will go down.
Hopefully this will become the new G35 premium oem.
Bet your wet handling is better than the worthless directionals [after worn halfway].

Good luck on the less than stellor [too hard a tread compared to Pilots] DB S2 but considering the downsides of A/S they should be adequate except in snow or ice in New Jersey..........except Sussex Co.

The DB S2 is good for ATL and the South where we might see an inch a year.

Re: Tires-any Michelin Pilot alternatives?

I definately have heard of other users of the db S2's remark about snow / ice traction issues. But since I'm in Southern CA, I'm figuring that I won't run into that issue [unless I decide to take up skiing]. But no doubt that an all season will have more downsides than a summer tire like the PS2 during the dry season. In the end, it is all about trade-offs / compromises...
