19" OEM Wheel Paint Issue
19" OEM Wheel Paint Issue
So I bought a '05 G35 coupe last Saturday, and the paint is coming off the wheels. It has the 19" OEM Forged Ray wheels.
My guess is the previous owner used some harsh wheel cleaner. To me, it just looked dirty so I didn't think anything about it.
I'm going to try to have them respray the wheels for free, but if that doesn't happen, I might consider a few other options:
1. Have it sprayed back to stock
2. Powder Coat the Rims Gunmetal (haven't seen it done yet) Does this damage the wheel during the firing process?
3. Use some Duplicolor spray paint on them
Any opinions thanks.
Oh yea, here are some low resolutions pics of my car. Need to find somebody with a better camera.

What do you want to know?
Get them powder coated, powder coating is going to be the strangest and look best for a long time. No, it doesn't harm the wheel.
Don't bother with anything else.

Paint or ?
Hi. Nice ride. I like the white - it looks real clean on the G35.
So, when you say paint is coming off, do you mean like chipped off or discolored? I had same rims and noticed that I had several spots which looked like below pic.
A couple of ideas to try if you don't mind elbow grease:
a. rub out with a good paint scratch remover (worked on some of my discoloring)
b. wet sand/color sand lightly with very high grit paper. Rub out and re-clear.
Regarding your orig. options below:
1. Professional re-spray is probably your best bet- although may be pretty expensive as well.
2. Powercoat? hmm.. no idea on heat affect, but damn good question! I would research that one quite a bit. You probably don't want to be the first.
3. Spray? ok, so used a duplicolor metalic spray on a RSX I sold a few years go. It did not look too bad at first (had a metal-gray look kinda like the Rays you got now). Major drawback: they did require respray after a few months as brake dust would affect the metalic paint eventually. Since you cannot put a clear over a metalic spray (it turns it to crap), I had to respray again before I sold it. So, if you were selling, or just want to touch up small spots this may not be a bad option. Realistically it is not a good option long term due to upkeep alone. Besides, do you really want to go cheap-o already on your new ride...?
Good luck!

powder coating is safe! I just said that, there are dozens of cars on here with safely powder coated wheels. My uncle powder coats and has done countless sets of wheels that hold up fine and nothing changes when they are fired.
Powder coat! Toughest and best looking!

how the heck do you powercoat black chrome? The above photo looks different from the black chrome on the Work wheels I had.
