Re: nail in my rear tire!

Just happened to me last week on the rear - my brand new 19" SO3! Went to America's Tire where I purchased my new rims/tires and they repaired it free (2" nail near but not on the side wall - no damage other than the puncture). I asked about the speed rating impact of a patch and they said it's not an issue when the tire is PROPERLY repaired per specs provided by an organization I don't recall. So, theoretically it still should be good for 186 mph!

Re: nail in my rear tire!

The speed limit test are done on brand new tires going straight on a cooled metal drum in a lab with ZERO CAMBER. Don't confuse them with Summer temperatures and turning or any camber in suspension. Don't assume that a tire with 5,000 miles of road service is suitable to actually operate at these speeds.

I would not consider a patched [even the best patching proceedure] tire suitable for high triple digit speeds for even a minute. But any speeding is at owners risk anyway.

Without X Raying the tire you really don't know the internal damage.

Re: nail in my rear tire!

Wow, there must be something going around! I had a nail and a screw right next to each other in the driver's side rear tire. I wasn't so lucky, mine were on the edge of the tire. I was close to the legal limit for tread, so I just replaced all four....

Re: nail in my rear tire!

i have a nail in my passenger side rear tire. its too close to the sidewall, so the repair shop says it cant be fixed. so, rather than spend 250 on a new tire, the nail has been there for the last 10000 miles. not very safe, but f it.
