Wheel Weights

The issues of a wheel's weight is a factor in performance evaluation... however, it's not necessarily a decision making factor for many people when looking to purchase.

This thread is for two reasons:

1) a poll to determine how many people really consider weight when shopping for a wheel (reasons aside and level of importance doesn't matter, just simply is it a factor at all)

2) Many of us know about wheelweightsdotnet - but I have found a thread on a bimmer forum that I actually like even better! Its has photos of the actual wheel being weighed.. a great source for those of us that are concerned about wheel weight: here's the link: http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/m6-...omparison.html

Please be sure to vote in the poll.

Appreciate the link.

Think they should have posted a few cheaper wheels to show the difference inb weights.

you can compare with lots of others on this site: http://www.wheelweights.net/

that site has many more (including cheaper wheels) - but I'm not sure how up-to-date is is... and there are no pics.

The bimmer site has current wheels - many of which are not on wheelweights site.

I use too, for track use, but then I bought track wheels. My Daily wheels, I'm not worried about anymore.

I definitely care! I first started out with set of cast 19s by Axis. Right off the bat, I noticed decrease in gas mileage and more braking distance. Then about few months later, I switched to forged monoblock 19s by Rays and the car felt way more lighter in terms of braking and acceleration.

To me the weight of the wheels is not the most important deciding factor, but it is definitely a key factor.

My priority when choosing wheels:

Design > Quality > Weight > Price

Mike as you've noticed, I also pay attention to the tire weight. It can make a delta difference as large as the delta difference in wheels.

Want to add tires to your poll?

lets let it run for a few days... I suspect the number of ppl that consider tire weight is a lot less... I consider it too, but I dont think the majority would... and I've come to be more interested in grip than weight - but I agree a tire's weight is important...

We can piggy-back tire in a few days... I want to see how this poll turns out first.

i have found pilot sports ps2 are one of the lightest tires. i saved a total of 4 lbs each wheel by switching the tires. 8 lbs of rotational mass is gone.

My 19's are 23-23.5 lb. I didn't know that when I ordered them, but I was very hopeful they were light, or atleast not boat ancors.

The poll should read:

Yes, I consider a wheel's weight when making a choice buy it's not a priority
Yes, I consider a wheel's weight when making a choice and it's the most important factor
No, I couldnt care less how much it weighs

The reason is because I would choose option one, yet I have 30+lb 20" TSW's. This is because I DO care about wheel weight, which is why I would never get wheels that weigh 40-50lbs ( they exist unfortunately ) but a 30lb wheel isn't a deal breaker for me because as weight goes down, price usually goes up exponentially and in the end it's really not worth it to me.

In the end, tire weight is more important anyways, yet no one seems to care about that.

There could be a half dozen or more configurations of what order considerations would be... however, this poll was to determine whether or not the majority of people care about wheel weight at all... you aren't the only one that stated the obvious though:

what makes you say no one cares? Do I need to start another poll?

here are two posts just in this thread:

The variance in weight between same size tires is not nearly as broad as wheels... typically a few ounces to a couple pounds - and even though it is farther from hub so rotational mass is a factor even at low weight, a rim has huge variance in weight and therefore normally more of a concern for most people.
