WHAT TIRES TO GET
WHAT TIRES TO GET
I need some help here and am a newbie at knowing about tires. My current stocks are bald and winter is coming. I wanted to get all seasons for my 6MT-w-Brembos but was told that nobody makes all seasons for those particular stock rims. So no my only choices are winter tires (we probably won't see snow here in Philly 'till December), stocks (1200 installed - High Performance), or a set of Yokohamas (under 700 not installed - ULTRA high performance).
What would you guys do? Any advice would be much appreciated.
p.s. To tell you the truth I had planned on just potting winter tires on my stock rims and then buying a new set of sweet chrome rims with summer tires in the spring...but I can't find and rims that will fit over the Brembo's without paying thousands of dollars.
PLEASE HELP!
Thanks much!

Re: WHAT TIRES TO GET
I just got the pilot sport A/S and I love them, but for the money the yokohama avs db2 is probably a better deal. Go to tirerack.com and compare them. I also went up to 245/40/18 - 255/45/18 to give me more selection in brands and models. It doesn't snow where I live, but the extra durability of these tires over the max performance OEMs is what I hope makes them a better choice.
Re: WHAT TIRES TO GET
No way, the Falken Ziex series out-performs the Michelin's any day....the Pilot ps/2 are way more expensive and only have 220 tread wear, the Pilot sport a/s have 400 tread wear and are around $265 per tire. The Falken's Ziex tire, for example, is 360 tread wear and will last substantially longer not too mention are only around $132 a tire. Best advice, shop cheap for a solid performer, don't let anyone tell you "Michelin's" are the "best tire", it's simply not true and they are way way more expensive than most out there. Hell, I'm not a big fan of the Kumho's, for anyone that has used them know they last like maybe 6 months at best, but check out the new line of Kumho, called Kumho Ecsta ASX, offers a 420 tread wear, as opposed to the standard Kumho Supra 712's at a 280 tread wear. These new Kumho ASX's will cost you a measly $141 bones! Seriously, don't be like the Michelin's boys and pay out of pocket for 2 sets of tires per year...OUCH! Hell, you'd be better off having a daily driver at that rate....I know, I have one! Lastly, the ride comfort is as good if not better with minimal noise. The Kumho's are a bit louder though, so the Falkens are a really great buy. Good luck...Here is the link to a standard front size of 245/40/18, as an example:

Re: WHAT TIRES TO GET
Thanks for the input, but the tires you listed are 245/40/18 and I thought the sport package rims could only take the same size as the stock tires which is 245/45/18.
Am I wrong on this? Will 245/40/18 fit on the back stock performance rims? Thanks again!

Re: WHAT TIRES TO GET
If you are interested, I have a set of aftermarket wheels and Blizzak snows which I used last winter on my 6MT coupe. I got the package from the Tire Rack in November. They where awesome in the snow last year but I am now selling the car. I may be including the snows in the deal but if not, let me know if you are interested. I can email you a photo if you want. The wheels are 17" (yes, they fit over the Brembos) ASA KA3 bright satin finish with Blizzak WS-50 (different size front and rear).
Thanks,
Roger
Thanks,
Roger

Actually he meant the 245/40-18 for the front two, as they are the same rolling size as the stock 225/45-18. More tires are available in 245/40-18. The back two are still 245/45-18. Though some have used 255/40-18 or something like that. But that is smaller rolling size. The equivalent size compared to the stock rear tire size would be 275/40-18, but that is too wide for the stock 8" wide rims. (Though some have run that size anyways)

Re: WHAT TIRES TO GET
The government and tire manufactuers WARN that tire treadwear index numbers are not to be used BETWEEN brands for comparison.........only useful within same company to compare grades.
Tire manufactures assign these numbers for marketing purposes after doing wear test against a reference tire but there is little correlation since the test are just 8,000 miles in [San Angleo Texas special track at low speed] then extrapolated to some number.
A 280, or 320, or 400 may last the same [wear to 2/32"] on the same car it varies greatly!

Re: WHAT TIRES TO GET
Anyone using Pirelli PZero Nero M&S (is that a long enough name?). Seems to have good ratings on tirerack for an all season tire. I'm particularly interested in all seaons given that I live in Seattle. Thanks.
Re: WHAT TIRES TO GET
I am working on my winter setup now too.
I was going to go with the PZero Nero M+S tires, but they are on national back order right now with no estimated ship date. (The 245/40/18 is the one one backorder, the 275/40/18 for the rear is available).
As a result I am very close to going with Blizzaks. Just dont know if I am going to get a set of dedicated wheels though now.

Love my Eagle F1 GS-D3's as well, but I wouldn't touch a flake of snow in them. Lucky for my, I'm in SoCal, so they are my all-weather tires.
