how to prevent wheel studs from rusting/turning brown?

For those of you who are using open ended lugs. I noticed that it turns brown and will rust after awhile. Which looks nasty. Is there a way to prevent the wheel studs from doing this?

I wanted to run some open ended lug nuts, but this is the only issue that's keeping me from doing so. Not unless I can find a way to stop this from happening.

Sand the studs down carefully so you don't damage the threads then paint them.
