Making the G oversteering rather under (Drifting)

The G's spec tends make the car to understeering rather than oversteering. Which I find it very scary. I prefer oversteeing. How can I set the car up to oversteer so I can drift. Is Tein Flex the only option? b/c I know Tein Basic makes the understeering even worst. What is the cheatest way?

Re: Making the G oversteering rather under (Drifting)

1) Get wider front tires. I suggest 245/40 front, 245/45 rear. (or 255/45 rear)

2) Get adjustable sway bars, set front to soft and rear to hard. (most effective IMO)

3) Lower the car.

4) Turn off VDC and do a couple of donuts until VDC light stays on. Perferably in the rain.

5) You are ready for drifting.

Keep in mind that with the 3500lb curb weight and 112" wheel base you won't be doing any serious drifting without major suspension mods.

Re: Making the G oversteering rather under (Drifting)

I'm not into drifting by any means but this is how I would set up the suspension, wheels, and tires.
1. compared to stock, you want softer spring rates in the front and/or stiffer spring rates in the rear. Most coilovers, including the teins do the opposite.
2. you want adjustable sway bars that you can set full soft in the rear and full stiff in the front. You could just leave the stock rear sway bar and add a hotchkis or 350evo in the front.
3. you want a non-staggered tire set-up. If anything, thinner in the rear will be helpful.
4. get tires that are too skinny for the wheels so they will be stretched. IE, putting on 245's on a 9.5" (or wider) wheel.
5. overinflate the rears.

I'm sure that there may be some drifting experts that can add to or modify my suggestions.

Re: Making the G oversteering rather under (Drifti

Thanks for the input guys. They all help a lot. I am always into drifting way before I have the right car. I used to have an automatic and I try to drift with it......bad idea... I didn't get into any accident but it was hard to control. I am not going to be too crazy about it b/c the G is expensive. But I want to have the setup so I can drift if I find the right spot to do it.
I think I will go for the sway bars first.

Sway bars and tires are the cheapest way to assist in drifting... I'm running 245/45 front and 255/35 rear Fuzion ZR-1 tires (17") with Hotchkis Swaybars (Med F/R) and it is semi-easy to drift (in an empty parking lot, of course) - being that this car is an automatic, it doesn't bode well for sustaining a high-speed drift, but it's still fun hanging the tail out...

Al, setting the sways full stiff in front and soft in the rear will just increae understeer correct? I think what you meant was just leave the front bar stock and buy an afermarket rear bar and set it to full stiff to promote as much oversteer as possible.

I think you are correct and al503 got it backwards.Soft up front and stiff rear.

Re: Making the G oversteering rather under (Drifti

Or just disconnect the stock front sway bar on one side..........that will give you REAL oversteer.

The oem front bars are always way over stiff. This is what creates the bulk of the understeer by setting the front roll stiffness ratio in excess of that necessary to balance the extra front weight [53/47] .............the front roll stiffness may grow progressively to 60>65>70>75% of total roll stiffness in a 2" body roll as the front bar compresses the bushing slackl

Yes. You guys are correct. You want to transfer stiffness to the rears so going full soft in front and full stiff in the rear would be the way to go. Sorry for the brain fart.

I have my hotchkis set on full soft front and rear which will transfer about 45% stiffness to the rears. This and the springs I have put me at almost neutral with just maybe a hint of understeer.

If you have not seen Keiichi Tsuchiya (The Drift King) test the 350Z, he said that the car can be drifted with the VDC on only with acceleration and no braking. Thus you cannot control the car with the brakes because it has LSD like effects when trying to take a corner hard. Mind you, this was a stock 350Z with no mods.

im not that great at drifting or anything.... and tear it up when its wet but just for fun... i dotn compete or anything... that said... i have a few really good friends with sr20 240sx's and last drift event i went to.... GOOD GOD 350z was tearing it up. Im sure it had a lot of suspension work, but this car can drift and drift very well. There was a badass is300 turbo there and a lot of sr20's and the 350z n/a was the best by far.

Re: Making the G oversteering rather under (Drifti

my set-up is good for drifting:

245/275 tires
HKS coilovers - front sent to 5-10, rear 30 (out of 30)
Stillen Adj. sways - front softest / rear stiffest
VDC fuse removed - yes, removed. Not turned off, removed.
