Tire question

I have a 2004 G35 coupe with the factory 18" wheels, and i need to replace the rear tires. currently the tires are 245/45/18 but I was wondering what other tire specs would work? i dont really know to much about tires and what the benefits or disadvantages would be with going with differnt widths, and heights but someone told me that i could use 245/40/18 or 265/40/18? what would be ideal? i was looking around and it seems that 245/40/18 are more common than the 245/45/18 in terms of availability.

With the oe wheels only being 8" wide there's not much you can do. 265's require a 9" wheel so that's not going to work with the factory wheels. Incorrect size can also toss off the VDC.
