Is this NORMAL?

I took my '04 G in for its 15,000 service. The service dept told me I need to replace my rear tires. I only have 16,400 miles on my car and thought that this was pretty quick to need new rear tires. They told me that this was normal for the stock 18's though. Have any of you experienced this same sort of wear. The kicker is they want $289 for each new tire. I think this is outrageous for a performance 18" tire. Id rather pay $800 more and get a full set of new rims and tires. Please advise and post comments. Thanks fellow G drivers...

Re: Is this NORMAL?

Did you drive the car hard? Peelouts? Anything out of the ordinary? The Michelin Pilots won't last very long, as they are ultra-high performance tires and the compound on those aren't the most long-lasting. Make sure to check the tread yourself to make sure they're not trying to d!ck you over. Also, if you're going to get tires, don't get them from the dealer.. you'll be paying retail! Go to tirerack, or even better contact Eastern.. they'll probably be able to get you a nice deal on new 18's.

Yeah, unless you drive like Andretti all the time, your Pilots should last until at least 20K. Check the tread wear and see for yourself.

Re: Is this NORMAL?

I got ~10,600 miles on my rear Michelin Pilot Sports. I could probably get another 5,000 out of them *IF* I rotated the wheels on the rims. The rear tires were slightly out of alignment and wore pretty bad on the insides. If you're in the same boat as me and didn't rotate soon enough then you might probably definitely maybe need new tires... What are the wear bars telling you?

Re: Is this NORMAL?

According to the dealer, there is 4/32 tread left on the rears. They said it was wearing more on the inside. I drive normally and never do any burnouts or put excessive wear on the rear tires. I was told by a friend to do a cross rotation so the inside will then be placed on the outside. This will give me some extra life but it still seems odd that they wore so fast. They will price match any tire shop. I had planned on getting some new rims and tires in April so hopefully they will last and be safe through the winter. Any deals on tire and rim sets.... Thanks for the replies.....

I have 23k on my Pilots and still have a bit left on them. I do alot of highway driving and dont take it to easy on them at all.

May not be a good idea if the car is to be driven in snow. Even with full tread, the Pilot Sports have been reported to drive poorly in extremely cold/snowy conditions. General consensus is to use snow tires during the winter.

Re: Is this NORMAL?

I live in San Francisco Bay Area so there will not be any snow driving or really horrid driving conditions. I think by swapping the tires over I can easily get another 6k miles out of them..

I just popped my tire 2 days ago (rear right). It just whizzed and slowly sunk on the ***-end of the car. My car at that point on the speedometer was 27,030 exactly (I rotated around 25,000 miles).

Turns out that cause of the pop was due to a nail (like the ones from construction sites) but the treads had plenty on them....

Just to add... I bought the car in California, then drove to New York, then to Florida, and then to Texas. The car started with 5miles on it too

So those Mich. Pilots last long if you take care of them...and don't step on nails.

I'm now getting Yokohama AVS ES100's... can anyone tell me anything about these? Anyone already have these?
