That would be pushed out WAY too far on the sedan.

Boon is right.

On the sedan you require 38mm front and 45mm to 55mm rear.

+38 offset is the pERFECT offset for the sedan, or at least for my setup witht he wheels being perfectly flush and not sticking out !!

I agree, with the 8.5 inch wide wheel the +38 is perfect front and back.

8.5" all the way around on 38mm offsets is fine, 38mm in the rear on 9.5" is a no no. We have a ton of research on what should and should not be used on the sedan. We only want to be in the business of giving out numbers that are set in stone guaranteed to work and never ever rub in the suspension's entire range of travel. If we violate that principle and proclaim something as good when it is not we set others up to have disapointments that never should have happened. Who wants to pay what rims and tires cost, only to have clearance issues. Furthermore, Enkei measured a sedan with 9" wide rims and a 38mm offset, on 245/45-18's, that tire size was only 2mm from the fender lips, a rim that is 1/2" wider will eat up that 2mm of clearance and more. On a 9.5" rim, 45mm is the minimum offset.

Myself, I would run 55mm offsets on 9.5" wide rims vs 45mm, but that is for no other reason than IMO, the 45mm setup allow's too much tire to stick out side the body where the body curves inwards towards the bottom of the car, doesn't look right, again,....IMO.

Gsedan,

What offset is optimal for a 17x8 wheel with 255/45/17 tires on a sedan for all four corners? I'm thinking 38mm or 45mm but which one is the best? Thanks.

Now that setup would rock, about time someone's considering it I'm pretty sure that the 38's will clear front and rear on that setup. To be certain you could buy two 38's at first and bolt them to the rear to check then order the other two. Worst case would be the 38's would be for the front and 45's for the rear.

What rims are you looking at that have those offsets?

Good to know that you seem to approve that combination. My goal is to have a good street setup for non-winter months here in California and to be able to have a decent setup for a few road racing events a year. I was thinking of the 5-Zigen FN01R-C 17x8 wheels. They are pretty damn light at 17lbs and come in 35mm or 43mm offset (I goofed with the orginal numbers ). Plus they don't break the bank. So do you think 35mm all around would suffice? Or do the smart thing and order only 2 first?

For the tires I wanted to go with the 255/45/17 Kumho MX or BFG g-force T/A KDW. How has your experience with the MX tires been? Thanks.

I was thinking about it, can you get the rims in 8.5"?

The MX's have been terrific in the summer. Their performance in colder temps is more of a drop off then I expected. Though not a complaint, they do make their share of noise while driving. When the front MX's finally wear out I'm pondering either KD's or PS2's.

Unfortunately no. 17x8.5's are hard to come by. Ideally 8.5" would be best for the 255 wide tire but 8" is still in spec although at the low end of the spectrum.
