question about wheel locks for aftermarket rims
question about wheel locks for aftermarket rims
I was about to order some McGard wheel locks for my new rims, and I went to autobarn.com It asked what vehicle and such and it came down to 4 different kind of locks,
1. Cone Seat
2. Cone Seat Tuner
3. Regular Mag Shank
4. Under Hub Cap
Well I know number 4 is ruled out and im pretty sure 3 is to. But can someone tell me the differnt between cone seat tuner and regular cone seat. I suppose its just the profile of the lug but I just want to double check before I order them. Would I be better off the the Tuner Cone Seat?Anyone have any idea? Oh yea, if it matters my rims are 19' Ro_Ja Formula 7's
Heres the website if you want to take a look at what im talking about..

McGard's Regular Shank locks, is the exact wheel lock that Infiniti sells for the stock wheels.
Cone seat, describes the mating surface between the lug and the wheels. Tuner, means that the whole lug is much narrower, so it can clear many "tuner" wheels, which have much narrower lug openings. (The stock lugs and locks didn't fit my Work Meister S2R rims)
Here is the regular cone seat lock and key, whose key is the size of a typical socket that comes with a socket wrench....

Here is a picture of the tuner version. Notice the key is much narrower. The sockets I normally use on my lugs, wouldn't even fit in the lug openings of my wheels. So tuner lugs come with a special "key" for the regular lucks too. This special "key" is barely smaller than my lug openings...
If you have wheels that have narrow openings for the lugs, you'll need tuner lugs too, as your stock lugs will not fit/clear the openings. In which case, you'll need the McGard spline drive lugs (to go with your locks). Here is a pic of what they look like:

You'll probably want to call up the store that you are buying your rims from, to see what kind of lugs and locks you'll need. When my rims arrived, it came with a box of funny looking lugs. I thought to myself I wonder why. Then when I found out none of my stock lugs or locks fit, I had to buy a whole new set for the car. (The ones that came with the rims were too easy to remove)
If you need to buy the whole set, you should be able to buy a package, that comes with 16 lugs and 5 locks.
