Hey guys, I have been bothered by rear brake squeaking as of late (usually when going slowing down at low speeds to a stop light)...

I took the car into the Infiniti dealership adn they said they will replace the pads if there are less than 3mm... I was like, "Gotta be, cuz it's so squeaky"... anyways, they did a test and my fronts are at 7mm (recently replaced by infiniti) and the rears are at 5mm...

So I'm out of luck, any idea why I may get squeakiness? I have painted calipers, but it's been neraly half a year since they've been painted.. any run off should be wiped off by now right?

well there can be a lot of reasons. but if you have a little bit money to spare, i recomand you to get some performance pads.
and another way to fix it is. go to a brakes shop. they have a spare, that you spare on the pads. it will fill up crakes on the pads. that might be antoher reason your brake making sound.

 

One dot of wd40 on the rotor will clean it up. don't use any more

i think he means put some WD-40 on it, in the amount of one dot.

In my experience with BMW's (notorious for brake squeal), I found that the squealing was coming from the Carriers. For those of you who don't know, the carrier is the track that the pads sit on. Everytime you press the brakes, you're compressing the caliper's piston which in turn, moves the brake pads and presses them against the rotor. Find some high-quality anti-squeal compound and put it on the carrier's tracks. Or it could be what kenchan described, which is possible.

 

I must respectfully disagree with the suggestion to put WD40 on any part of the brake assembly. Even a little bit goes a long way. And it is a LUBRICANT (hope I spelled that right) that will naturally degrade your brake's stopping power if it gets on the face of the rotor

 

i second that.. the brake squeak was very annoying i would recommand get new pads which lessens the brake dust... or get stoptech brake system it will not squeak =P

 

Your rotors and pads are much more susceptible to gunk and oils from normal use
than a dot of wd40 to clean the surface of the pad that has the contamination.
it's not going to hurt it unless you're spraying them like you were using brake
cleaner spray.

The squeek typically comes from oxidation built up on the pads from the rotors
after rain or carwash. the dot will clean that off, but if you spray the damn thing,
it will eat away at your pads and cause premature wear.

 

My pads have also started the squeak at 11k miles...Im going to try to spray the caliper and back of the brake pads w/ disc brake quiet...and spray some brakleen or brake parts cleaner on the rotors...i think that should work..

 

yah, try brake cleaner first and if it doesn't rid the noise, try the wd40 trick.
I don't like using brake cleaner cause you need to remove your wheels before
spraying unless you don't care about the wax it will tear off your wheels and
possibly stain the finish.

 

I had a similar problem and took it upon myself to challenge the dealership and here is what I found.

The dealer installed brand new pads and rotors on my car and the car was squeaking like an old tank on rusted chains. My neighbors down the street could hear me pulling out of my driveway.

Anyway, what I found out was that the mechanic did no replace the HARDWARE kit required in each brake job you get. Which means the spings and fasteners for the calipers and pads, were not holding the brake assembly together tight enough, thus causing a lot of play and noise.

I took it back to the dealer and agreed with me and re-did the whole thing and got a free oil change for my trouble.

Not sure if this is what you have, but service people tend to dismiss your claims just because their computer says something else.

By the way...DO NOT USE ANY LUBRICANTS on your brakes. Anything, happens and the insurance company and the dealer will not be liable. YOU WILL.
