wheel weight

Hi..

I just called the manufacturer of my wheels and asked howmuch each rim weighed.. they told me 26 pounds.. HMmmm without tire..

so.. Im wondering howmuch this can slow down 1/4 mile times.. and what's so different in preformance between an 18lb wheel and a 26lb wheel..

Re: wheel weight

At the stillen meet, I asked the same question to the person who was dyno'ing the Z's and G's. He said on the average you will loose 10hp at the wheels. Also depends what tires you get. Some are heavier than others. I just know Pole Positions S03's are one of the heaviest tires on the market. I read that somewhere yesterday.

Re: wheel weight

Honestly I don't you will loose to much.. You have 19's right now right? Anyway, I'm pretty clueless in this area. I'm just relaying what I was told. If you really care about speen and up to tenth of a second in drag times then look into those lightweight Volks. Otherwise I think you should go bigger and be stylen.

Re: wheel weight

from what i've been able to figure out, the oz superleggeras has one of the best $$/gram ratios in 17" wheels (should carry over to larger sizes). i'm sure there are a few more, but i can't research everything. the superleggeras are pretty tough to beat. ssr comps are lighter, but they are more expensive as well. enkei rpm2s are close to the superleggera.

Re: wheel weight

Just put 4 mini spares on. Then you'll have the lightest wheels out there, and you'll be super-fast!

Re: wheel weight

26 pounds isn't all that much. How much do stock wheels weigh? When I bought my 17"s for my old Prelude years ago, I was happy finding out they were 23#.

Re: wheel weight

Stock 6 spoke sedan rim weights 22.5 lbs each. They are not that heavy but the more your unsprung weight drops the better the handling, accelertaion and braking become. The OZs are bad a$$

Re: wheel weight

Just thought I would chime in. First off the wheel weight does have an affect on the car's performance. You have to accelerate the wheel in 2 meridans. Linearly as you have to do with the rest of the car, but also rotationaly. Rotationally is the biggie here. If the rim weighs more as most all larger diameter rims do, you have to spin up the rim mass which is concentrated further from the centerline of the rim. Kind of like the spinning figure skater who cannot pull her arms in as far. If a car looses 15 HP on a rear wheel dyno as a result of having to accelerate the increased rotational mass of the wheel, then it would also effectivly lose another 15 HP in the real world as a result of having to also accelerate the front wheels. Food for thought.

Re: wheel weight

Infiniti claims 22.4-straight from the dealers macro on the car-Can't help you there. Still, not bad for a stock rim weight.

Re: wheel weight

I hear they're heavier than the 6-spokers.

I've heard that 25lbs unsprung, rotational weight can be as good as 100lbs in the interior of the car as far as performance goes.
