18" PermaStar Rims.

Finally the 17" PermaStar rims arrived. They really look great. Placed NITTO NT555s on them. Here's a picture of the rims in the box. Here is a link to view the rims on the G35c at ImageStation.

Yes it is the OEM 18" wheel, but it is not chromed but an entirely new process developed by a company called PermaStar (TM). Here is a link that goes into a lot of detail about the process.

Does it chip, corrode, pit, peal or fade like chrome does? Chrome is cheaper ($150), so if these offer greater wear, then it seems like a great deal. However, I've never heard of them before, so I'll let you be the guinee pig!

Re: 18" PermaStar Rims.

this process is supposed to have a 5 year warranty where chrome tends to only have a 1 yr. and they are not to chip, fade, or corrode.

Re: 18" PermaStar Rims.

Just because you have not heard about the process, does not mean everyone else is the guinea pig. Obviously, others including General Motors, Porsche, and ASTM have done considerable testing on the product. Other posts have suggested a competing product, but IMHO they are an inferior product.

They make no mention of meeting General Motors established standards. PermaStar test results show them meeting or exceeding seven tests against GM standards. While not documented anywere to my knowledge, I am told that Porsche is using the PermaStar process. These two bits of information plus several other successful ASTM tests have convinced me this is the superior product.

Re: 18" PermaStar Rims.

I'm not so sure about these alternate chroming processes. I just got 20" ADR Sterlings in what was supposedly chrome. They look great, however, I got a piece of paper with them that mentioned a new process that was not really chrome. I have less than 100 miles on them and they seem to be getting pitted (similar to rock chips). I called Wheel Max and they want me to bring it by. Who knows if they will replace them or if the replacements will be any better. On a side note, my stock chrome Infiniti wheels didn't sustain 1 chip nick or scratch in 1500 miles. I saw screw the environment and chrome wheels the right way... I'll be dead before it matters anyway.

Re: 18" PermaStar Rims.

Daman was the one that said it cost $175. Don't know where He got that figure, but I paid $185 per wheel, and $415 for each 18" OEM wheels, for a combined total of $600 each. The NITTO tires were, obviously extra. I went from 17" wheels that came with the G35c, and was able to sell them as a package deal with the Goodyear rubber after my new PermaStar rims and NITTO tires were installed. I've gotten lots and lots of compliments on the car shine (CrystalGuard) and the very shiny rims.
