Snow tire q's

Hey guys, you guys are a lot smarter so i'll just ask straight up.

I want to get snow tires this winter, and if I get 235/40/18 for the stock 18s on a 2003, will they cause any problems. i can then rotate after this winter. Someone suggested, just get 4 225/45/18s, is that a good idea? I'm sorry, I am a tire newbie..I am just going off what people have advised me. Thank you.

Neal

I plan on buying a dedicated set of snow tires and wheels from tirerack for the season. I'm going with 17" wheels and 215/55HR17 snow tires. This is the stock size wheel and tire for the Autos. There will be no speedo error with this set up.

Also, a more narrow tire is better for the snow. If you are going to stick with an 18" tire go to

http://www.1010tires.com/TireSizeCalculator.asp

and make sure the size tire you are thinking about will not be outside of the 3% error range.

BTW - tirerack is releasing some ultra cheap 17" wheels for the G in late september. The manufacture is SportEdition and the models names will be: D3, E2 and E3. All between $89 and $92 per wheel. At that price you can put some SWEET snow tires on some cheap wheels for around $1,000.00

best of luck!

Blizzaks

I went with Tirerack also. Got Bridgestone Blizzaks and feel I made a great choice. The tires are unbelievable in the snow where the summer tires I have are totally useless. There is a bit of squirm with the snow. Nothing major, but you can tell you have a tire with a softer sidewall.

so should i just get 4 225/45/18?

17" rims are out of the question. I'de rather get 18" snow tires and then get new rims next summer.

225/45's are only 1.35% faster than stock, so well within the 3% max. Keep in mind there are two types of snow tires "Performance Winter" and "Studless Ice and Snow".

I'm going with Dunlop Winter Sport M3's which are "Performance Winter" I made this choice because in Cincinnati, we have weeks of completely clear roads, then weeks of completely covered roads. "Studless Ice and Snow" tires can be kind of scary on clear roads. So yes, even in the "winter" category there are trade offs to be made.

Best wishes making your selection

I bought Dunlop winter sport M3s as well seeing how they have the best balance between driving in the snow and driving on the cleaned roads.
