Motegi (American Racing) FF7 Rims

I live in the Toronto area. Last winter, I purchased a set of FF7 rims with snows from Tiremag. Intent was to use these as a 2nd set for the winter. It was not until spring I noticed 3 of 4 rims rusted at the outer lip. They were only used for about 4 months. I took them back to the store. They indicated that the outer lip was polished and will rust without regular maintenance (nice to know after the fact - I would have picked different rims!). In winter, I wash my car only about once a month.

Anyways, the store indicated American racing will not provide any warranty for the rust. I was quite furious and surprise how any rims can rust after 4 months of use. I know American Racing products are cheap by comparison but they still were almost $1000 CAN. Anyways, my only option was to accept Tiremags offer of them painting the outer lip. Hopefully, it will not look too bad. They had my rims for 4 months now and still have not painted them. I guess there is no real rush since they are for winter use.

I tried doing a search on the internet and could not find anyone else with this problem. Anyways, I am wondering if you think Tiremag's remedial is fair and acceptable. Since they are my winters, I didn't really raise a fuss and will be happy if the painting will cure the problem.

What are the wheels made of? They must be steel if they rusted. AL can corrode but it is much more resistant to that.

That definitely sucks. Get the wheels sanded/ground down so that the rust is removed, if it is not too deep. Then get the wheels painted, powdercoated, or clearcoated. But it may be cheaper just to sell that set and buy some new AL wheels.
