Cupping front tires

03 6spd. Coupe- The original Michleins cupped severly and were replaced at about 24K, with Yokes. Now at 33K the Yokes are starting to show some cupping, and are getting noisier by the mile, so they are doing the same thing. Two alignments at the dealership. The 350Zs went through this. Anyone else with the same experience on a G?

I have only ~9000 miles on my G and I can barely see any difference between the inside and outside edges of my front stock Michelins. Nonetheless these things have gotten disgustingly loud. I am at the point where I only enjoy the the car at 45ish and faster over new asphalt because it seems to be the only speed where the michelins don't scream. The only fascinating thing about these Michs is their outrageous price.

My buddy has gone threw his stock michs and and now is on his second set of Yokahomas. He likes them better, much quiter but not as sticky. Personally I am at the point where I am ready to by the queitest tire regardless of performance.

What kind of noise are we talking about? On new pavement I can't really hear the tires, have about 12k on the original Potenzas, and on $hitty pavement it's loud, but it's always been that way with the 19's on poor road surfaces. Can you describe the sound?

cupping is caused by improper balance, and/or worn shocks/struts.

they cup b/c the shocks are worn out..

Same issues on my brother's '03.
Complain bitterly to Infiniti and maybe if enough complain, they'll step up for Coupe owners too.

I think most would disagree with your diagnosis - this is not a worn out used car.

I plan on seeing what Infiniti and the dealer response is- seems like these cars have the same problem as the 350s, just wondering if they have stepped up and admitted it yet.

Most have found that their dealers will only say that it is a combination of soft tires with aggressive suspension tuning. I doubt you will hear much different.

My 04 6MT had the same cupping problem and the sound was getting very noticable after 10K miles on the clock. Very loud "Whomp whomp whomp whomp" sound, especially on concrete between 30-40mph. I took it to Bradshaw Infiniti in Greenville, SC, where I purchased the car and after some consultation with someone higher up, they decided to re-calibrate the toe-in, front and back and swap the front tires (left to right, right to left). This was done as a courtesy with no charge. I also had taken the liberty of printing out one of the threads from here about the problem, and solution people were using ( zero degree toe angle). The service manager gave me his card and ask me to keep him informed. I still have a little of the sound but not as much as before. I'll keep an eye on the cupping.

Im still in disbelief your Mich's lasted that long....

Mine usually last 18,000-21,000 miles TOPS.

And yes, cupping is a bad shock, improper balance, or your riding with your tires a little under inflated. I cuped the **** outta my last rears, but I had them anywhere from half inflated for dragging to normal for the streets. It happens.

Sounds like a low roar, commonly called tire roar. It has a pulse to it that can be noticed when coming to a stop, matching the rpm of the tires.

I think some of us are speaking of cupping of the rears similar to the 350Zs and myself and other are talking about the tire roar of the front tires. The problems with the front tire roar have been described here as feathering, cupping, too aggressive toe angle and bad tires.

Pesonally, I don't have any problems with my rear tires. But definately have a disgusting roar from the fronts. I think on my next and first set of tires I am going to go with the quietest tire that fits the stockers and possible taking out some toe angle to try and minimize any noise.

Someone on the board had a shop swap their front tires left to right, effectively evening out the tire by running on that fresh outer (now inner) edge of the tire. This might be my first step depending on if I can't stand the roar until I need new tires.

Any recommendations on new tires?

Tires

I noticed how loud the car is the first time I drove it home, but now I'm used to it and it doesn't really bother me as much. I tried to look for uneven wear, but can't really determine that. I have 04 G35c with 18k miles now.

Seems to be a very common problem on our cars, my Mich's only lasted about 20K miles. I believe that the Mich's are the quiestest though, except their kinda soft which explains why they only last approx. 20-25K miles.
