G35 vs. I-Beam

Last week I was going to work and ran over an I-beam laying in the middle of the interstate. Here's the damage...

Re: G35 vs. I-Beam

Dealer wanted $1000 for new wheel and tire. Instead, I ordered Axis Supermesh...19x8.5 in front and 19x9.5 in rear. I should have them on later today and will post pics. Here's another shot of the damage...

Re: G35 vs. I-Beam

If it's only cosmetic and a tire will seal against it, I'd have saved the money.

It's ridiculous how much they charge for these wheels... twice as much as it would cost to get something forged at 2/3rds the weight.

That rim can probably be repaired to look new. Try shipping it to: Ye Olde Wheel Shop 800-526-8260.

The only problem is that you will be without a rim for a couple of weeks.

Re: G35 vs. I-Beam

I took it to my local discount tire to see if they'd even mount a tire to the damaged rim, and they said no. You can't tell from the picture, but there is actually a crack in the wheel where the indentation is. They said this crack, despite how small it is now, will continue to grow as the wheel absorbs more pressure, etc. I would have replaced it through my insurance, but my rates would have gone up since they count it as collision. So in the end, buying new wheels/tires was the best option.

Re: G35 vs. I-Beam

Ahh. It's not cosmetic only. That sucks.

You might want to talk to a service manager or parts dept. manager, and tell them that the rim is too expensive and you're considering just getting aftermarket rims. They may be willing to sell you one rim at a lower price. It doesn't hurt to ask, the worst thing they could do is say, "No."

I did. I said "that's crazy...I could buy a really nice 19 or 20 inch forged rim for that amount of money." He said, "I know."

That was it.

Re: G35 vs. I-Beam

Why don't you check on ebay or post a message to see if any body is selling their stock 18's. I know i've seen G35 wheels on ebay.

Re: G35 vs. I-Beam

I just checked the classifieds of this forum and there are a couple sets of 18's for sale. Good luck man. By the way what was an I-beam doing on the interstate?
