All-seasons on 18s

How's the all-seasons tire (avon or michelin etc etc.) do in snow (NYC/Long Island winter) on 18" rims? I hate switching back and forth between winters/summers, so I figure i'd compromise by getting all-seasons.. but am I better off getting 17-inch A/S? How much winter traction (i drive very slow in snow.. i'm just worried about getting stuck somewhere,) will i lose if any if i stick w/ 18s vs 17s?
Sorry for incoherent questioning.. i'm late for my dinner appointment.. :-P

18s vs. 17s shouldn't make much difference in snow traction. 17s are nice because of the lower cost and better pothole survivability.
