Pressure in a nitrogen filled tire is more stable with temperature change because pure nitrogen is drier than ambient air.
Less moisture = less expansion.
Molecule size is only a factor in the gradual loss of pressure through the porosity of the tires and bead seals.
The smaller oxygen molecules in an air filled tire can bleed out easier than the larger nitrogen molecules.

keep in mind that air is 80% nitorgen
if the O2 leaks out faster then what's left will be even higher % nitorgen
being an inert gas, nitrogen will not expand when heated.
the tires still get just as hot, the pressure just does not increase.
I will give it a try for free. may be espcially good on motorcycle tires.
The G's wear out tires before rotting etc become a problem anyway.

Oxygen/moisture in air reacts with rubber compounds in tires, why expensive tires like Michelin have a special sealed interliner that won't let oxygen thru to inside of tire compounds and metal filaments.
Study Bromo/Cloro- butyl rubber inner liner
Unlikely most performance tire don't exceed the 20,000 mile point where failures begin to rise at an exponential rate.

To reiterate the advantages for nitrogen filling:
1. Less moisture-means more stable pressure at various operating conditions
2. Larger molecules mean less loss over time
3. Nitrogen is more stable than oxygen which likely means less oxidation within the tire. Coatings solve that problem
Just make sure they are actually give you nitrogen, you can't tell the difference from smell etc. So watch them fill your tires, or they may just use an air compressor. Basically its good if its free, but not sure if the cost is worth the benefit. You still have to check your tire pressure regularly, its not a perfect system.

Know this - To REALLY be on nitrogen, you have to purge the air and fill with nitrogen, then purge... do the cycle about 5 times to REALLY get a high concentration of N2. Topping off w/ N2 is just a way of getting $$$$$.
Also, some people use Argon in their tires. Helium could be used too, but would leak out quickly.

I call Shenanigans - another 6mt.net style rant from me!
I work for a tire company. These statements are mostly bogus, but highly effective at getting you to part with your money. Nitrogen is necessary for Highly-hysteretic compounds that produce high tire temps. I.E. Race tires that AREN'T street legal! Don't believe me? Touch your tires after a hard romp.
Proper tire pressure reduces the chance of tire failure, NOT the gas inside the tire (unless maybe the gas is highly explosive, which would be fun to watch).
In my opinion, you're better off just checking your tire pressure every month. Ask anyone in the tire industry and they'll probably tell you that people don't check pressures frequently enough.

Here are the highlights...
Benefits of Nitrogen
Increases Safety
In 7 million miles of truck tire testing, nitrogen inflated tires lasted longer.
Tire failures were reduced by 50%
Tread life was increased by 25-30%
Fuel economy was increased by 5-6%
Improves Performance
Improves steering
Improves handling
Improves braking
Reduces chance of tire failure
Saves Time, Money, and Tires
Dramatically slows pressure loss from permeation
Stabilizes pressure and virtually eliminates pressure fluctuations due to temperature change
Reduces tire oxidation
Eliminates interior wheel corrosion
Reduces running temperatures
Decreases false alarms and activation of Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems
