R-compound tires with much stiffer sidewalls have better tolerance to be being squeezed onto thin rims. Some people have even squeezed 285's onto 18x8's but I wouldn't recommend it for street tires, even UHP tires.

Sedans come with 7.5 inch wheels don't they? If so, I think 235's are probably the widest you want to go.
