Potential Engine Replacement needed
#16
Reviving this thread because it looks like this has happened again.
I was noticing a slight ticking sound starting a few weeks ago when I was running my car, and I had an oil change where I was going to get it checked out scheduled for about 2 weeks from now. Unfortunately, the service engine light came on a few days ago. I stopped driving the car, and brought it in for service yesterday. The ticking was getting worse as I was driving it to the dealer, as well as it obviously misfiring when idle.
Code pulled was a misfire on Cylinder 5. The dealer says that the injectors and coils are ok on it, and a compression test shows that it's most likely the piston ring that's causing a misfire, and the fix is to replace the piston ring. They said that they would not do that at the dealer, but would do an engine replacement (again), though it's not recommended.
They did say I could bring it to a mechanic who might do a repair instead of a replacement.
I'm wondering if there's anything else that can be checked/done before I finally call it on this car. It's gotten me 160k miles, so it might be time. I just really love the car, as it was my first one, bought it (stupidly at the time) straight out of school.

Perhaps I used the wrong words for the spark plugs - I can get the service receipt at some point. I think it was some sort of oil cap. In any case, they didn't want me to drive off in the car as it was still spiking after the flush today, so they put me in a loaner (this was done at the dealer). I've had all my service done there and they've been very reasonable to me before, so I just want to confirm.
Is there anything else that could cause something like that to happen?
