Disconnect 6x9 shelf speakers w/new sub?

I just had my Basslink installed (sounds good) and I asked the installers to disconnect the shelf 6x9 "subwoofers". I remember reading on the forum that this was recommended, but the installers suggested I leave them in.

I ended up following the forum advice and having them go ahead and disconnect them, but now I'm wondering if it was necessary? Do the 6x9 muddle the sound that much?

How about removing the 6x9 speakers all the way and leave the grill in place. Would that help more of the bass from the basslink travel into the cabin?
