Yeah the V1 and 8500 are very good detectors, they detect radar very well and give you enough time to slow dows, the problem that I've been seeing in my area, Dallas, is that more cops and troopers are starting to use Laser, really callled Lidar, gun. They arent always on like radar, they are very acurate and the officer just has to press the lil button on his gun to turn it of and on, they aim and shoot, and thats it, the V1 and 8500 pick this signal up but if your radar detector goes off with Laser, then you've all ready been hit.

This is why they have developed laser jamers or laser shifters. One good item i think is the Passport SRX and SR7, which is a 8500 radar detector and a Laser shifter all in one they are a little pricey $1500 or so, http://www.passportsr1.com/srx.htm but i am actually selling one on the forum if you want to check it out for less than Half the price. but its a hell of a detector/shifter.

This debate will go on for another 5 pages and then a few months later someone will post again asking which one is better. Either way u cant go wrong really, there minor plusses and minuses for each. Anyways I will just tell you from my experience with the 8500X50. The thing has already paid for itself twice over, so I am a happy camper. Which ever one u go with make sure you get Mike's radar mount and Invisicord hardwire cable and you will have a clean set up.

Forget the justification. If price isn't much of a factor, then get the best. But as for trying to compare a radar detector to mods and deciding which offers the most value... ...forget it. Two seperate things. Is that detector going to offer what that exhaust will, or vice versa? Exactly. Just decide what it is you truly want and how much you're prepared to spend for it. It'll be good practice for all of those mod choices you'll be faced with soon.
Actually, my V-1 is over 8 years old (Spring 1998, the first with the 'new display), so I guess I'm close.

FWIW, I tried the 8500 on a trade for a week, and I couldn't wait to get my V-1 back, even though it's a lot older! The nice thing about the Passport is that it's quieter and doesn't go off on 'falses' as much, but about the only real positive. The display in 'Expert Mode' is too damn small to be useful at a glance. The extra info once you learn to use the V-1 is much more valuable.

I'll probably get the up-grade to the new V-1 in the fall or even next spring since it has the POP Mode, and I do some driving in the US where it may come in handy. $189 and they send me a brand new unit with full wwarranty and all new accessories! Hard to beat. With most other detectors, you toss it in the trash, and you pay in full.

Did you actually type your serial number in to the V1 site? I've seen much higher upgrade prices for much newer units, specifically $279 for a unit just 2 years old or so.
