Audio system complete with Sub and OEM HU
Audio system complete with Sub and OEM HU
I just finished my audio system. I used the OEM HU, ADS 6-channel amp (in 3-ch mode), Focal 165K2s in the front doors, JL 12" freeair in trunk, and a few boxes of Dynamat Xtreme. The entire install is stealth, and I gave up virtually no trunk space. (G35 Sedan) Check it out here - G35 Audio

I never knew JL Audio had a free air sub. I dont think that is the right set up for that speaker. But looks nice. Always loved the free air setup. How does the speaker hit. I bet it would sound better in a box.

JL Audio made the 'IB' (Infinite Baffle) series of subwoofers. They have been discontinued though; You may find a dealer that still has a few in stock. The set up pictured is correct for that speaker assuming he has a tight seal between the front of the subwoofer and the rear of the subwoofer.

Re: Audio system complete with Sub and OEM HU
It plays very low and has decent output, and fills in the bottom end, but it is not as tight as a woofer in a good enclosure would be. There's a reason JL discontinued it, not many people were using them. There are better sounding alternatives. I just didn't want a box for any reason.
Re: Audio system complete with Sub and OEM HU
to get the seal I used a piece of MDF against the back of the back seat, cut to fit perfectly. I also used a generous amount of silicone and expandable foam to fill in a few tiny gaps. After all that was in place, I put the factory trnk piece back over the MDF and bolted the woofer on using T-bolts
Re: Audio system complete with Sub and OEM HU
asked about the nav because there was a previous post who upgraded amp/speakers or something and had volume issues with the navigation . . . what you've done is what I want to do - amp/speaker/sub upgrade with the oem head unit, the navTV thing, and some headrest monitors - but only if it does not mess up the volume for the NAV, I know when you upgrade some other manufacturers system with navigation, they route a seperate speaker for the navigation itself, its hidden and volume controlled by the nav itself - just wondering how you handled it . . thanks in advance
Re: Audio system complete with Sub and OEM HU
Nav volume can be VERY loud if you have the system cranked and she tells you to turn left. I use the Nav religiously, but never use the voice, so it's not an issue for me. The voice, in my opinion, prompts too many times and too often. I can see why someone would have an issue though. The fix is easy, like you said. There is an audio output from the navi system that feeds the OEM head. Just cut it and feed it to a small amplified speaker, maybe under the dash. The colors are blue/white and white/blue at the Navi, pins 12 and 13
