NAV / DVD simple switch?

OK, I've read I think all of the posts on getting the stock nav screen to play anything other than NAV. Seems to me like there is two ways of doing it (that people have posted about anyways)
1. The tv tuner / switch by AVElectronics.com
2. The tv tuner / switch by Pioneer (GEX-P7000)

What I'm wondering is...say you dont want TV capabilites, or any other input except DVD...do you really need either of these switches?
I am looking at this one DVD player (that does in fact have a TV tuner built in, and front aux RCA inputs). And I'm sure there is a way of interfacing the video out of the dvd player into the AV screen. This mod would cost a total of like $200, including the small electronic parts to create the interface board, and seem to provide all the features everyone wants, while saving money & the space of having a switch. ((matter of fact, I'm looking into replacing the stock head unit, getting a double din console, and putting the dvd player in place of the crappy Clarion head unit to save even more space...but thats a whole other mod.))
I dont see whats so special about a switch...if there is something....would an expert care to enlighten me and everyone else?

Re: NAV / DVD simple switch?

yea I know what you mean... but I think if you look up the diagrams for interfacing with the Pioneer (GEX-P7000), you can probably figure out a way... but having all those inputs from the switch is more convenient IMO, incase you want to swap things out like add a laptop or ps2 or any other audio/video device... the only thing i'm waiting on is an interface with the audio directly instead of the FM mod...

Re: NAV / DVD simple switch?

Well, hopefully, someone else will figure out a way, considering I'm not an electical engineer. The DVD player I was looking at does have one aux input, most people would probably not need more than one. And the audio interface to the stereo would be different if you had a different head unit, like I'm planning on having. The FD5-TV unit has dolby digital / coax / SPDIF out. My question is what could that plug into to provide 5.1 ch surround sound to the speakers? It also provides s-video out...so maybe that is a possibility to interface with the NAV screen, instead of simple RCA. I just need to figure out what kind of signal the NAV screen is expecting on each wire. If any expert info, please post.

Re: NAV / DVD simple switch?

the connection to the screen is RGBS. to get your S-video to the screen you'd have to unplug/cut the RGBS signal from the NAV/DVD, get an NTSC to RGBS converter that accepts S-video input and plug that back into your screen... but this means you're only getting video from the DVD player.. to get your Nav and DVD player to work simultaneously, you'd have to get an RGBS switch to take the RGBS from both your DVD player and Nav unit and output to the Nav screen. Between to converter and the switch you're probably already at $300... i could be wrong. If that pricing is right, you just might be better off with the Pioneer unit or even the Avelectronics unit... just a cleaner and simpler install.
I'm with you though... need some real experts to shed some light..

Re: NAV / DVD simple switch?

Something you probably already know, but:

1) AVElectronics system requires cutting 1 wire leading to NAV system, which could be the source of warranty problems in the future
2) System uses FM modulator, which compromises sound. If you can wait, blitzsafe is coming out with AUX kit

Things to consider.....

Re: NAV / DVD simple switch?

I have tried to find someone who says that the Pioneer 7000 works and I havent come accross it. However I am trusting that it works.... If it doesnt please advise as I am looking to install a PS2 that can display on my OEM Nav screen so I can play games, and DVD's... Thanks!

Re: NAV / DVD simple switch?

OK, done some more research, got some more info.
Here's the system I want to set up (for a bunch of diffferent & the parts required to do it:

#1 Multi-Media Player: (Innovatek FD5-TV) ~$170
#2 Video Decoder/Switch: ??? ~$150
#3 Head Unit: Digital Signal Processor (Alpine PXA-H510) ~$350
#4 Double DIN console (special order from Japan) ~$350

So basically, the end product will look like this: The DVD player & Digital Signal Processor replace the stock head unit, set it the double din console. the coax audio out of the DVD player goes into the digital signal processor providing 5.1 channel surround to the speakers. the s-video out of the dvd player goes into the decoder/switch, along with the RGBS wires from the DVD-ROM nav player. Out of the decoder/switch comes RGBS into the stock nav screen (one is merely a passthrough, and you can switch between the two). The DVD Player can play many formats, including DVD, MP3, CD, VCD, SVCD...and it has a built in TV-tuner, and front side RCA aux inputs, if you want to plug in your digital camera or PS2 or whatever.....All for around a 'G' ;.p
(but then comes more speakers & amps...it never stops ;.p)

I've been able to locate everything except that damned decoder/converter. There's stuff that does more, but they are more expensive (obviously). I need something just like this: http://www.kramerelectronics.com/pdf/401Dxl.pdf , but with RGBS (in/out) & S-Video (in). If you know of any company, or any info leading to a product like this...PLEASE let me know!!! I'm so close I can 'G' it. ;.p
