alternative to dynamat

I didn't say the alternatives were the same as Dynamat. Dynamat is a great product no doubt but it is hideously expensive. A few of the alternatives like RAAMmat have evolved from asphalt-based to butyl-based products which are better. All the asphalt-based products would still do a better job than aluminum-covered bubble wrap. While adding mass is the goal, it isn't everything. Pliability, adhesion properties, and durability are key attributes to consider when choosing a deadener. Using a heat gun is a PITA. Deadeners that are too stiff to easily cover panel contours are also a PITA. I use and prefer RAAMmat combined with Ensolite closed cell foam. It's a much cheaper alternative than Dynamat.

k67p67 - would you say the ensolite is worth it? i'm going to be ordering some raammat shortly for the doors.

It depends on what your goals are for your deadening project. The Ensolite is more for sound absorption than for mass loading. It will muffle a vibration but not eliminate it. It is useful in doors and headliners for reducing road noise.
