Re: Replacement Subwoofer
AngelC,
You can use the 4ch amp in 3ch mode with 2 channels in stereo for your mids and highs and the other 2 channels bridged to the subwoofer. You can buy a 5ch amp and have the ability to fade between your front and rear speakers. And as you have stated, you can buy a 2ch or mono amp to power the sub. Definitely power the sub in any configuration. Check out JL Audio's 500/5 amplifier.
Good luck,

Re: Replacement Subwoofer
I'm planning on two amps; a JL300/4 for the componenets and a JL 300/2 (bridged) for the sub. The main reason for my not using the 500/5 you mention is dimensions. It's too long to mount vertically on one side of the pass through (on the front trunk bulkhead). The 300/4 and 300/2 are shorter, and one will fit on each side of the pass through. As a skier, I want to keep my pass through. With a coupe, the 500/5 might fit in the stock amp location, but you'd better measure first; it's quite large.

Re: Replacement Subwoofer
Consider the 250/1 instead of the 300/2 on bass. The 250/1 is a class D amplifier and you won't notice the difference between 250watts and 300watts. Physically the 250/1 is smaller and it incorporates an infrasonic filter which will limit over-excursion of the sub.
Take care,

Thanks, good sugestion, but I already have the 300/2. I do like the fact that it is the exact same dimensions as the 300/4, so it will be symetrical looking on the trunk bulkhead.

Re: Replacement Subwoofer
I am running the JL AUDIO E Series 6 channel amp to JL AUDIO 6.5 XR in the front and 5.25 XR Series to the rear. And the sub in the stock location with a 2003 model Kicker CompVR. Kicker CompVR handles more watts than the regular comp. I am running about 175 watts in 4 ohm with the gain on the amp to the max. However due to annoying rattle from third brake light I am dynamat Extreme the whole entire back dash from top and from under the trunk.
