Replacement Subwoofer

I am looking to replace my Bose subwoofer in my sedan. Can someone recommend a good alternative? I want to use the stock location, and I will be driving it with a JL Audio 300/2 amp (bridged).

I've certainly heard that they are very good. Which model would be best assuming I want to mount in the stock location?

Re: Replacement Subwoofer

Unfortunately, JL has discontinued their series of subs that would work in the factory location(infinite baffle). Try a local authorized JL dealer and ask for the IB series of subs, they may have a few remaining.

You can try another JL series, but you would have to build an enclosure into your rear deck. If you want to use the stock location and not build an enclosure, look for a sub that works in a free-air or infinite baffle arrangement.

Good luck,

Re: Replacement Subwoofer

What is the size of the stock sub? What model IB series should I look for?

Look for 8IB-4. Hope you can find one.

Take care,

Re: Replacement Subwoofer

yea..good call...they are discontinued. Check ebay..they pop up there sometimes. If you think a 10 might fit, then check out the elemental designs E10o sub. It works great in IB. www.edesignaudio.com. I really like the way these subs perform. Very SQ oriented with great spl as well.

PS. I have a coupe so i dont have the sub in the rear..i have a pair of 6x9's so im not sure if a 10 fits back there...

Re: Replacement Subwoofer

I am actually looking into this as well. I don't have the Bose but still have the cutout in the back of my sedan. I found a kicker sub(comp c8) that can run free air. I don't know how good it is, however. I haven't been able to locate an 8IB4. There haven't been any on ebay recently.

Re: Replacement Subwoofer

At one time, Kicker also made a free-air series of subs. I would check a local dealer and see if they are still available. The comp series was intended for sealed or bandpass enclosures. Regardless of the brand of sub you use in the factory location, ensure that you seal off the rear deck. Infinite baffle alignments mandate that the baffle be sealed, just like in a sealed enclosure.

Good luck,

Re: Replacement Subwoofer

amg35,

Do you think maybe Crutchfield has the Kicker Comp C8 described incorrectly? In the link below it says that it is suitable for free air use.

Re: Replacement Subwoofer

Crutchfield did describe the comp sub correctly, it can be used free-air. Its power handling will be decreased slightly, but it will work. Seal the rear deck.

Good luck,

Re: Replacement Subwoofer

OK, the consensus seems to be a Free-Air sub is the ticket. Anyone know what is the biggest size that will fit without cutting???

Anyone do this mod yet???

Re: Replacement Subwoofer

8" Sub is the largest you can fit.
