Is Your DLS UP6 Mute above 11kHz?

Although DLS UP6 SpecUp6a.PDF note that UP1C tweeter have “Frequency response 1 - 23 kHz”, I hear nothing above 11-12kHz while testing my installation with Kane’s DVE disk, title 10, chapters 5-7 (Frequency Sweep, 15 Hz to 20 KHz).

Could it be that signal is lost during down-conversion to 2 channels or these tweeters just can’t reproduce it? Thanks

Hmm... since I've tested DLSUP6-equipped cars with a real-time audio analyzer and seen no evidence of the missing octave you refer to, have you had your ears checked lately?

What is your source? You refer to a DV test disc - what is your source and system? And how does it sound with music?

Ken, joking aside, I haven’t my hearing examined in very long time ago, some 20-25 years, and it is possible that my hearing is the problem here.

Audio signal path is laptop’s DVD player connected to AudioControl’s Overdrive that is connected to the HU via OEM SAT pass-through port and then HU speaker level to bridged JL 300/4 amp.

Unfortunately only after I started this thread, I tried DVE (Digital Video Essentials) DVD disc in my home on the Sony DVP-S7000 player using Sennheiser’s HD580 headphones and heard nothing above 11-12 kHz neither.

So now, it’s either this test disc or my hearing.

Music sounds OK, I guess. Still less than 20 hours on them and initially too much bass on them until I changed JL HP crossover from 70 Hz to ~110 Hz.

Only other problem that I currently have is the low volume noise (not whine) that I hear while there is no input signal. I guess that is the price for running speaker level twisted pair wires next to the power line.

use a good mic hooked up to a real time analyzer and you'd be surprised what it picks up and you *can't* hear.

I had my ears examined today. Sadly, over time hearing dip developed around 14.5 kHz, which starts at 12kHz and it ends at 18kHz.

All this time I spend for planning, buying and installing speakers and amp is now for nothing, well almost. I am still curious what the real time analyzer curve looks like in my car, but StreetEffectz (InstallationsUnlimited) don’t have one. Anyone in NJ or NYC?

Or perhaps I should trade all this audio junk for supercharger that I can hear

Ability to hear high frequencies usually declines sharply with age... Someone learned to take advantage of this fact and make a device to keep those pesky kids away.

Damned kids, git offa mah lawn!

Good news is that we basically hear in octaves. The difference between 20 Hz and 40 hz is one octave - and a big difference. 2X or .5x is one octave.

So the difference between 10K and 20K is also ONLY one octave. Some people say that the audible range should be considered to be 16-16k, and I think that's about right.

The "inaudible" dog whistle sound on that Beatles album was at 17k.

If you are missing a few k above 12-14k, you're honestly not missing much musically, because of HOW we hear.

I used to go to 17.5k... but I KNOW I don't any more.

Great diagnosis Ken. I know I don't have all the hearing I started out with and it's going to get worse with the Zapco.
