Painting XM Satellite Antenna

I have the black "dead rat" satellite antenna on my '04 Diamond Graphite coupe. I looked into getting the new key-fob sized antenna, but it would require not only replacing the antenna, but adding a splitter as well as replacing the rubber trim that goes along the top of the window. I would prefer to prime, paint and clear coat the existing rat but have read conflicting information as to whether or not it would hinder reception to paint it (with or without metallic paint - how can you tell the difference - I'd assume DG is metallic??). Comments and advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Looks great. Did you do it yourself or have it done? Is it primed, painted and clear coated? And was it done on or off of the car?

Did it myself. Primed, painted and cleared. Got the paint from www.paintscratch.com. Painted it off the car. It's not to hard to do.

No molding needs to be replaced. Simply paint your new antenna and use a business card to aid in getting the new wire between the rubber molding/glass and body. No need for a splitter either.
I too had the hockey puck xm and switched out to the new style.
It did not take any adapters. Took about 15 mins. Very worth it! Suprisingly, I get better signal, even though it is quite a bit smaller than the 04 version.

How did you get the wire through the lip that the weatherstrip fits on around the inside of the trunk? They used butyl rubber sealer at the factory. Also, did you paint yours?

It goes down the left side of the rear window into a small cable protector and just underneath the trunk weatherstrip, down the inside of the left rear fender (behind the gray trunk lining) and finally to the tuner which is mounted below the black plastic base of the trunk in the left rear corner. You can un- hook it there and then pull the wire through. Use some adhesive remover or Goo Gone to remove the anetnna. It'll probably take you 15 minutes tops.
