Thumbs up My Nuvi Install with custom Power Outlet in cubby..pix

You can see from my previous threads and inquiries that I was looking into a navigation system. Well I received the Nuvi 660 for my Birthday (early present.. birthday isn't until the 13th).

I wanted a DD at first, but changed my mind after a lot of research.

The install turned out 100 times better than I expected it to in the end. It took me a good 3.5 hrs from start to finish, but the time and cuts were well worth it.

I managed to take a few in progress pictures, but would have liked to have taken more. My camera was locked in the trunk and I didn't want to risk reconnecting the battery while everything was apart to get it, but I managed to capture a few with my 8125.

Sorry I didn't take more in progress.

I hate seeing wire anywhere in my car, so everything AM is hardwired and hidden. I wasn't exactly sure how I was going to accomplish this install until I went to Radio Crap. They weren't any help there, but I found a 12VDC Accessory Outlet that can be hardwired into your car.

I decided it would be awesome to install it inside the cubbyhole since it is where the Nuvi would ideally be mounted and also would be a place to charge my phone. Here are two pix of the cubbyhole removed from the car.

Here is a picture of my dash all disassembled.

It was a ROYAL PITA to disassemble everything. I found a guide VIA the SEARCH button to locate the guide with pictures. I had a general idea about how to do so, but weren't sure about where all the screws where that needed to be removed.

The outlet required a 1 and 1/8 hole to be drilled into the cubby for this particular outlet (radio shack part number 270-1556). There are only two wires coming out of it. A ground and a power wire. I tapped the passenger side power outlet with the provided tap. Sorry no picture of it. You can ground the ground just about anywhere you want to.

Here is a picture of my base with my 90 degree splitter coming out of the Outlet. The Nuvi power adapter is plugged in and sticking up as well.

Here are a few with the stand on the base.

Here are two with everything minus the Nuvi in the cubby with the lid cleanly closed.

The Nuvi on the stand:

Last but not least, the Nuvi turned on:

Everything is PERFECT with one exception. With everything apart I somehow managed to screw up the in cabin trunk release. I can use my key fob to open it, but the release switch is baffling me right now. I checked the harness and wiring. Nothing looks messed up. I checked the in cabin fuse box and none of the fuses I checked are blown. The only thing that changed from before the install was tapping the passenger side outlet. I still have to double check to make sure voltage is still being carried through the harness.

Has anyone experienced something like this? Does anyone know where the release draws power from (which fuse box)...

So you have to unplug/plug-in all of that stuff every time you use it? Doesn't look like it will sit inside the cubby.

Need another poll option...should've gone DD.

I only have to unplug one thing. I plan on just leaving it there unless I'm parked in a shady place... then I'll put the nuvi unit away. It autostarts every time I turn the car on.

lol I was so close to doing the DD, but I travel way too much... I'll be using the Nuvi on trips... can't transport the G everywhere just so I can use a DD

Not trying to jack your thread, but anyone who wants to do this should keep in mind that the garmin sp26xx and sp27xx series fit perfectly in our cubby holes w/ no modification.

Great Work..I love my 660..There tough too..When I was recently t-boned,
the Nuvi flew out of the charging mount,(mount cracked)landed in the passenger footwell, and shut off..I thought it was done..To my amazement it works perfectly, except the mount, not a scratch on the 660.

Very nice install.

I do have to say I like my DD way more than something like that.

Looks good, but I don't see a need for the lighter adapter when you could have just cut off the end of the cigarette adapter on the power cord, and tapped that directly into your power source. Would have given you the same removability, while being slightly less bulky
