will 1 12" 1000w sound as good as 2?
need more info. it really depends on the type of sub and volume you have. there are 12" subs that will work in a box slightly under 1cf to others that will require 1.5 to 2 cf. As long as the subs are in their specified box design it should sound ok. In general a smaller box will yield a tighter and cleaner sound and will handle more power. A larger box will have a deeper sound.
I can tell you in my last setup with 2 12" running at 500w each, it hit much harder and had so much more impact then my current set of of a single 12" running at 1000w. all things being equal and the subs in their designed enclosure two 12s will outperform a single 12 (same sub of course). But if you're trying to stuff two 12s into a box designed for a single then the volume will be too small and the single might end up out performing it. It all depends on the sub and the enclosure.

My friend owns a stereo shop here in town. He let me hear his 2 days ago. He has one DB Drag 12, with 1,000 watts to it. Its a ported box. I was blown away. It was the loudest single 12 I have ever heard in my life. It was making hte roof of his civic jump. It blurred my vision. His rear view mirrow wasnt just vibrating, but the entire bracket that mounts to the roof was shaking. it was litterally flexxing the entire roof.
It all depends on what you consider good sound. For some, good sound is all the bass you can get, and in that case, the more subs you get, the better. But for others, sound quality is what sounds good, and a single sub can really do that well.
really depends on the equipment and encloser. Ive seen a 8inch JLw7 knock hard in a lexus. I mean 3times has hard as my 2 w3's

what doesnt make a civics roof jump n rear view mirror vibrate...lol j/k. jus had to say it sorry man....
i have one alpine 12" with a new audiobahn amp and i love it
the bass hits, but not to the point where the car rattles and is obnoxious
and of course you can control the sub to your liking but i personally think one high quality sub+ amp will be more then enough
