Sub box Help

Hello,

A friend of mine build a custom fiber glass box for me to house 2 JL 10w3v3. But now the box makes a splitting sound when the bass is loud. I took the subs out and inspected the box and saw a few cracks in them(around the ring where the subs mount). I there anything i could do to fix the box? Can I apply damplifier pro(its like dynamat) inside the box to fix it? Or should I ask him to build me a new one( he did it for free since I build him a PC). Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

I'd ask him to apply some new layers of resin to fill in/fix the cracks. Or just have him make a new box with another 2-3 layers so it will be stronger.

the wood might have started cracking from the screws. Did you pre-drill the holes before using the wood screws to secure the subs? mdf cracks really easy if you dont predrill.

have him make you a new box, you cant just replace the mdf ring since its permanently mated to the fiberglass.

If the cracks are only in the rings for mounting the subs that is not where the cracking sound is from. Are you 100% sure it's the box?

Im 100 percent sure its the box..just dont know if its from the cracks in the wood or the fiber glass...I know its comming from the front of the box for sure..in the front theres the two MDF's and in the center of the rings is some fiber glass..it could be very well coming from there.

Take the subs out, apply kitty hair fiber filler on the inside of the box around the ring, and use spring clamps to hold the ring to the box (unless it's a double ring to flush mount the sub) in which case, apply the fiber filler on the two rings and then fill. Oh, and to the nay sayers of "throw the whole box away," no way. You can cut the ring out carefully with a dremel/rotozip, and fabricate a new one, and then glass it in place just like you did the first one. The only time that would really jack stuff up is if the fiberglass box was finished and painted. Then it would take a ton more work, but it IS possible. (I did it after splitting one of my mounting rings.)

Good luck whatever you decide to do!

+1 don't throw it away, that sounds like an easy fix. Might take a little time but not too hard.
