V1 Installation issues

Re: V1 Installation issues
Here are a few pics of my 8500 install that might help. Mine's also to the right of the mirror, just below the tint strip. I think the unit(s) will only fit above the mirror for those without the Premium package and Homelink/Dimming mirror.

Re: V1 Installation issues
One part of the install I'm really happy with is using an RJ11 coupler on the back of the mirror. I fashioned a short 6" or so RJ11 cord that goes from the coupler on the back of the mirror to the 8500 itself.
This avoids the hanging "radar was here" cord when you pull the unit off when you park.

Re: V1 Installation issues
Mounted the remote in the ashtray. The ashtray still closes, so when I store the detector, there's no sign of it, its wires, or the remote.
V1 owners might not like this location for their remotes, since it'll require glancing down for the bogey counter and arrows. On the 8500, the remote isn't much more than a mute button and power/alert lamp that doesn't really need to be in normal line of site.
BTW, for all this stuff I pretty much consolidated multiple install pics/tips from a bunch of users here and on FA for this "hybrid" approach. So thanks to all of you who posted this stuff long ago

I was about to say the same thing. Xband is still very much in use in NJ.

Re: V1 Installation issues
I finally got the remote display to work. The bad part is I had to use the supplied RJ-11 (and re-route all the wires to do it). I tried several different types of phone line and two hardwire adapters and nothing. I would have done this from the start, but it was much, much easier to run the phone line without the heads on them through the dash.
I did mount the remote display in the ashtray though, because I keep my hand on the gear shift while I drive, so it is easy to mute it.

BigRed - do you have any pics of your install? I am about to do the same thing, and that's the exact reason I wanted to put mine in the ashtray as well. My one complaint about the V1 is having to constantly be hitting the mute button, so I want it somewhere convenient.

Here is my remote install in the ashtray. It was very easy and only took about 2 hours.

Re: V1 Installation issues
There really isn't much too it. What took me the longest was just figuring out how to take the interior apart. One thing to check is your cables. Make sure they are 4-wire cables(2-line RJ-11). If you just used phone cables that are laying around, they may only have 1 pair of wires in them. A lot of cordless phones come with these cables. Then make sure you have a fuse in the fusebox for the direct power adapter. Last, make sure you have a good power and ground. I wired mine to take power from the passenger side power adapter and I grounded it to the framework from the dash.

Re: V1 Installation issues
Sorry I am just getting back to you. I was in Indiana visiting the family for the holidays. I will take a few pics of the final install. The V1 worked great on the drive.
If you adjust the mute volume selector beforehand as well as setting the logic mode, the x-band is not that much of a factor. I rarely had to hit my mute button (mostly in the major cities and only when the family was sleeping!)
The V1 earned its money on the trip (MD to IN and back) on several occasions. I am more than pleased with the results and the investment!
