Audio question for those who know???
Audio question for those who know???
Haven't bought my G yet
Waiting for the 6MT sedans to arrive.
However, I do have a question about adding a sub to the stock system as a first mod. I'll be pulling my sub and amp from my Integra to put in the G.
I have read on here and on FA about problems using a converter to get signal to the amp on the Bose systems due to wierd impedances and the uniqueness of the Bose systems.
Is the standard stereo system (non-bose) standard? IE are the speakers 4 ohm, etc.
In that light, should I be able to add my sub/amp and converter without any problems to the non-bose system.
The non bose looks to be the better candidate for upgrading. it should be easy to replace the factory speakers (a must for good sound IMO) and add a sub, thereby retaining a stock look (deters thieves) and sounding good if not great.
Thanks for any input on this.

Re: Audio question for those who know???
have you listened to the stock system yet? i'm no audiophile or anything, but IMO, it's pretty good.. it could use a sub, which is easy to install.. there's already a space for it that was prefabricated due to the bose system.. just need to find the right cutout for that area.. the mounts should already be there.. u might want to install some sound dampening tape for the side panels, but other than that, the stock speakers work just fine. but if you're looking for crazy power output for competition purposes, i guess you'll want to change them out.. but just for good sound while driving and chillin.. any changes except for the sub will produce minimal sound improvement.. that's my opinion..
you might want to ask one of the current members of this forum that did some sound work in his G.. his member name is "pestilence".

Re: Audio question for those who know???
When I was into car audio (15yrs ago), Crutchfield was always an easy source for stock speaker sizes.
At my advanced age of 33, the stock unit sounds pretty decent to me. You can add a sub, but to do it correctly, I would suspect you would need to add an amp and crossover as well.

Thanks for the input...
I have a 100hz crossover, and an Earthquake amp tied to an isobaric box with 2 8" woofers in my Integra. I use a converter (speaker level to rca level) off the rear speakers to get signal to the amp. I replaced the stock speakers with Polk Audio 6 1/2"s in the front and Infinity (sp?) Reference in the back. The stock head unit controls an Alpine 6 disc changer, sound good at 30 wpc and its never been stolen 8^). I like the stealth approach to car audio. I don't want scumbags eyeballing my [censored].
Sounds quite nice. The sub isn't the type that rattles metal or anything, but adds a nice full sound. Granted its a hatchback, but I suspect a similar upgrade to the G would yield similar sound quality. IF the head unit is decent, which I guess is what I'm getting at.
Thanks,
G_Love

Re: Audio question for those who know???
G_Love, sounds like a good, not too complicated system.
My personal preference is to run the subs at a lower frequency (if your crossover will allow), such as 80hz or so. I prefer to keep the midbass out of the subs as much as possible. I've always prefered 8" subs over bigger, always found them punchier and they aren't complete power hogs.
IIRC, isobarics are the "infinite sized" box design? It's been a while...

Re: Audio question for those who know???
Hey, thanks.
Yeah, I believe its called isobaric. Heck, I bought the box in '93 (4 cars ago!). I've replaced the speakers in it 3 times since.
Anyway, this box has two 8 " woofers in line with each other like | | /. The outer woofer fires into the air and the inner one fires into the enclosure which is ported. Its unusual as can be, but I got a good deal on it, and it sounds good to me.
It was made by a company called Savard. They are based in Baton Rouge Louisiana, as is Bazooka company.
I was just trying to find out if the non-bose head unit was a better candidate for upgrades than the bose unit. I heard the bose during a test drive, and the sub didn't impress me. granted, I didn't get an opportunity to listen to a variety of music like I do in my car, but I thought the $900 might be better spent on upgrading the stock speakers and an buying an install kit to put my current amp/sub in it.
Alas, I don't have the car yet. I am going crazy waiting.
Cheers.

that's right, isobaric is where they are opposed to each other.
i haven't heard the bose system, but i've heard people say it wasn't worth the money. IMHO, spending the money to upgrade the speakers and add your own amp/sub would be better and probably cheaper if you already have the amp/sub. the stock system should have enough power to blast mid/tweets since the bass is now being powered by a separate amp. wiring and induced noise might be tricky though.
reminds me to dig up my old Boston plates and Fosgate amps/subs....
