aftermarket screen idea

Just had an idea.. I have only got about 8 hours sleep in the past 3 days and am working alot so maybe my brain is off..

I was thinking maybe using the motor/track system from a computer cd rom for liek a motorized nav? it seems like that is already kinda built.. anyone thought about someting like that and looked into the logistics of it..

I think it could work nicely.. would have to i guess look into the issue of getting power to the unit.. then also the weight of the monitor..

I was thinking for those w/o stock nav you have the open cubby hole with the lid.. if you could remove the lid, then cut/file away the pins that secure it to the console. then secure the lid to the top of the screen.. then when screen pops up yo have maybe some sun cover, and when screen goes down cover is in its normal spot and nobody is the wiser..

anyways just rambling! got my xenarc yesterday and im trying to think how im going to install it when i get some days off..

Re: aftermarket screen idea

I already took apart a cd-rom thinking about doign that same thing. Problem is there is no possible way that the motor could lift the xenarc screen. It is just barely powerful enough to lift the plastic tray on its own, espcially vertically. I thought about replacing the motor and a bunch of other things but space is really really tight to really do anything without cutting something and starting and stopping the motor posed a lot more complications that made it not seem worth it anymore. Also the top cover can not be simply mounted on the top of the screen, it is just too tall. I thought of this too until I put the lid on the top of screen and it covered an inch or so of it up.

Im currently working on installing my xenarc screen and have devised a housing that will fit into the cubby. The housing will allow the screen to move in and out of the cubby kind of like a typical indash aftermarket screen would. The housing will be made of plexiglass with a groove cut out on the left and right sides that will guide pins attached to the screen and allow it to be pulled in and out. I currently dont think i am going to try and motorize it anymore I took the xenarc screen out of the caseing it came in already and went to frame shop and got a frame that matches the metal in the willow interior perfectly and it the fits the screen and the cubby exactly. The frame will have pins on both sides that allow it to fit into the grooves. The frame will be semi horizontal when it is down and be pulled out and locked into place vertically by a latch on the inside top of the cubby cover. I will be doing the install this weekend and will post pics and a better description then.
