If you have ImageStation and want to see some additional pictures of the antenna just click on my signature below...

I was in the same dillema and decided to take the car with the antenna. Now that I've had it for a while it doesn't bother me anymore plus the rooftop location gives you the best reception.

Re: Ugly Satellite Antenna???

yes, moisture will get trapped under the OEM Terk. So, yeah your time to remove it without discoloration may be limited. We have one on our IP Pathfinder and I have to remove it every few months to polish under it. I ended up putting some clear bra material under the mount in the hopes of slowing down the discoloration. Of course you'd never see it on the top of a pathfinder tho...

Terk sells replacement adhesive pads. Its acrylic adhesive and there is a stong magnet in the antenna. Dont wiggle or twist it off, it might scratch.. you have to work something thin under the adhesive and pull up. I used plastic expired HMO card that was in my wallet nice and thin.. I cleaned the card off, carefully worked it under the antenna while pulling up.

Has anyone ever taken the factory antenna off?

I haven't removed mine because there is a "notch" in the trim around the window to accomodate the antenna cable. If anyone has moved their antenna and managed to replace that trim piece please share the details...

Perhaps the best idea for someone with a factory install might be to take off the large factory antenna then install a newer "micro" unit in the factory location.
That way it's ok that you have the notch, you cover any discoloration, you get optimal signal (it's supposed to be on the roof if you have a coupe), and it looks much better.

Good idea, I'm going to check on the micro antenna. Love the sat radio but dislike the factory antenna.

Re: Ugly Satellite Antenna???

"I have my Antenna on my rear deck with tint and everything and it works to I would say 90%. The problem is this, picture a satelite dish. You have the actual dish, and then you have the signal reciever in the front. Well, the satelite antenna works in a similar way. It uses your roof or trunk as the "dish" and then it "absorbs" the signal through the antenna which acts as the signal reciever.

When you simply put the antenna on the rear deck, the signal must now directly hit the antenna and since there's no metal or coverage to act a solid dish, reception is compromised.

To fight this, all you need to do is a get a small piece of sheet metal, and cut it so it fits on your rear deck, paint it black so it cant bee seen, and then stick the antenna on to it. This will up your reception from the inside of your car by at least 25%."

Where did you get this info from? What about antennas that are on the glass? What about portable SAT radios? You do not need a "dish"

Re: Ugly Satellite Antenna???

I recently installed XM on my 04 G35 coupe and tested several different ant. locations. From the start I knew I didn't want the ant. to be visable, and as an experianced XM installer I figured I could find a creative spot for great reception. If you remove the trunk lining underneath the rear deck you will find a small hole (maybe an inch in diameter) that goes all the way through the rear deck. To achieve the best reception I took the cover off of the Terk XM ant. that came with my Sat. kit (remove about 8 small Torx screws from bottom of ant.). When you take the top cover off of the ant. you will see that the acutual antenna sticks up from the circuit board and is designed in a circular shape. It just so happens that without the top cover the antenna itself will fit up inside the hole in the rear deck! I secured the antenna by using a piece of radio backstrapping (or plumbers strap as its called in hardware stores) I screwed the ant. to the backstrap then positioned the antenna how I wanted it and popped two SHORT screws through the metal rear deck, making sure the screws would not go all the way through. It's been about two months now and I haven't had any reception issues at all, and no visible antenna! Help this hopes you all out!!!

KPierson-- Would you happen to have a pic of your install? This is a new approach! Whereabouts is the hole you mention (center, driver side, ?)?

Re: Ugly Satellite Antenna???

the hole is almost right in the middle of the rear deck from left to right, and more towards the back from front to back. Once you get the carpet off and look at the rear deck it is impossible to miss. I don't have any pictures, but if I get a chance I'll pull the carpet off and snap a few (since you can't see anything at all with the carpet on)

Re: Ugly Satellite Antenna???

For my XM Roady, I ran the antenna under the steering column and placed it next to the VIN tag on the front dash. It's relatively invisible and I've had no reception problems in NC. I'll post pics if anyone's interested.

I went to the body shop that my dealer uses and asked for the matching paint. They
gave me a small bottle which I used in an airbrush to paint the low profile Turk
antenna. The paint is a base so you have to clear coat it as well. Mounted it on
the trunk. You can just see it behind the window in this photo.....
