Replacing all 6 speakers w/ MB Quarts

Hi Guys, I'm new to the board and have decided to jump right in feet first - so here goes:

I plan on replacing all my G35 6mt speakers with the following setup:

Front - MB Quart PCE216
Mid - MB Quart RCE164
Rear Deck - MB Quart DKE 169
Amp - JL Audio e6450 (6 channel)

I want my setup to look as stock as possible, with a lot of good, clean bass without adding a sub. I listen to a lot of Hip Hop, R&B, and House - with a touch of Jazz and Vocal. I own a fairly high-end home audio setup, so I'm used to good sound.

Is this feasible? Any changes/suggestions?

Looks like a good plan. I only have one comment/suggestion: Have you thought about going with the JL 500/5 instead? I know the e series is a little less expensive but you'll probably get a little more flexibility with the 500/5.

45 watts x 6 is good power but it doesn't distribute the power very effectively. The 500/5 will put 100 to the front components (very helpful for a front soundstage, which will yield the best sound quality), 25 to the rear panels (they are fill anyway and 25 clean watts will be plenty for that) and you'll have 250 to split between your 6x9's, when wired in parallel will give you a 2 ohm load and thus a little more power.

The quart components like a lot of power. 45 will probably be sufficient but 100 will be a lot better. I might also suggest another 6x9 that isn't full range. The 6x9's are oriented in such a way that you will be able to get a lot of the mid and tweeter frequencies up front. This is not ideal due to interference and cancellation issues. Again, for the best sound quality, you want most of the mid and tweeter output up front.

Hope I've made sense. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Al

Thanks for your advice!

I didn't see any MB Quart 6x9's that weren't full range - do they make one? If not, what would you suggest that would match the front and provide decent punch?

I don't know much about car audio so I assumed I had to have a 6 channel amp because of the 6 speaker set up. The 500/5 sounds like a great idea.

There aren't a lot of 6x9's that are dedicated 'subs.' You really don't need to find one that is dedicated because the crossover on the amp will filter out the higher frequencies. This will pretty much make the tweeters useless. If you want a 6x9 that doesn't have the tweeters, try a search on 'Tang Band' by dnyholm on Freshalloy. He's done some research on this and those 6x9's are very good.

Re: Replacing all 6 speakers w/ MB Quarts

Admonisher, I have had a loooooooooooooooooooong discussion with AL on this forum about my coupe setup. Here is what I bought after I learned enough from him..

MB Quart Comp 218.61 for the front
Infiniti Kappa 63.5i coax for the rear panels
Polk Momo 10" enclosed sub.
JL Audio 500/5

From my understanding, the 6x9's in the rear deck can be replaced with 8" free-air subs. The fifth channel on the 500/5 pumps 250 watts and can be split to send 125 to each speaker in the rear deck. If you check crutchfield, I think they have some free-air 8's made by Kicker. I was gonna go this route instead of the sealed box in the trunk. I honestly have no idea why I went with the box but anyway I didnt have anything installed yet. I have to save a lil more money because I am thinking of having them Dynamat my coupe for me.

'04 G coupe TB Graph 5A (all options except NAV and SAT).

Yes, that was a truly interesting thread of yours BlackBuzzard!

After a bit more research, I decided to go a slightly different route:

Front - MB Quart PCE216
Rear Panels - MB Quart RKC 116
Trunk - Infinity Basslink
Amp - JL Audio 300/4

This combination fell within my budget (~1000), and I think I'll be pretty happy with the setup. Only time will tell!
Went with the Basslink because I listen to punchy music a lot, and this thing is supposed to give decent punch without being obnoxious (a big concern of mine), and its TINY!

The basslink will be much better than 2 6x9's. Very good choices.

Does MB Quart make 3-way speakers in the coupe speaker sizes?

I think they make a low end 6x9 3 way but none of the 6.5 coaxials or components are 3 way.

Can anyone confirm that 8" subs will fit in the 6x9 location in the rear deck?

Re: Replacing all 6 speakers w/ MB Quarts

Felt like throwing my $.02 in to this discussion after my lengthy research and discussions. I've gotten a general consensus that it is best to go with the same product line of speakers when it comes to the front components and the rear coaxials/midbass fills. It looks like you have premiums up front and the reference series for the rear. If you can stomach some additional $$$, it might be good to consider the PCE model for the rears. I'd agree with others in foregoing the 6x9s and going with the basslink is a much better option. It's also been agreed that the MBs suck alot of power since they are 4 ohm speakers compared to the most 2 ohm models from other manufacturers. Other than that, good luck with your install and I'd like to hear how this setup sounds.

BTW, I'm going with the following setup to be installed next week:

-MB Quart QSD216 up front
-Remove stock rear coaxials
-Remove stock 6x9s
-10W7 in custom enclosure
-300/2 to power the QSD
-500/1 to power the 10W7
-Dynamatting up da a$$

I listened to a front stage only setup, and I liked it. Since internal cabin space isn't all that big and the big sound from the QSDs powered by the 300/2 would be plenty of sound to fill the cabin, I went with this option instead of getting rear fills for a 3 way setup. It also saved me some $$$. I demoed the QSDs and it sounds great with accurate reproduction and good highs. I'll have the 10W7 to handle the lower frequencies and give me some thumping bass to round out the package. I've pondered the bi-amping option, but decided it was $$$ that I didn't want to invest at this point to gain additional SQ until I seriously think about a DD/HU upgrade which may or may not happen.

Good luck!
