"ah....several installs...."

Here are the true test questions....

3. ask them "Do I need any adapter(s) or special parts for that install & if so, DO YOU HAVE THOSE PARTS IN STOCK?"

If they quickly answer that they will need a DD dash trim, JDM v35 AC controller, Nissan wire harness, Nissan antenna adapter, and LOCs if you plan on keeping the stock Bose amp.....then they know their stuff....well! They most certainly will not stock DD dash trim pieces and definately AC controllers ($295) at BB or CC and will tell you that you will need to order these parts from yosi/grubbs/japanparts.com/riverside infiniti.

4. Ask them "how long do you think it will take to install an aftermarket HU?

"ahhh....4 hours...." maybe if they know what they're doing....lol

5. Will I able to retain my Dual Climate Control on my AC?

"ah....what is Dual Climate control?" "ah...sure you will" "Hey Charlie...guy wants to know about something about a Dual Climate Control.....do that Pioneer HU come with that feature?????"

try that test at BB or CC next time you're there irregardless of whether you are looking at car stuff or just buying a copy of Wedding Crashers or a Bose SoundDock for your Ipod!

Hope this helps....

True. But even some so called custom audio shops don't know that either.

A local shop that has done a lot of nice, custom work on my buddy's Z, told me they could use my OEM controller and trim panel and cut it to fit. They even said they had done it before. They had an arrogant attitude about their abilities, but I knew better.

That changed my impresson of them.

Can you just get the opening in the dash cut to fit your DD stereo? Do you have to have the DD kit?

Sean,
I agree that even custom install places also not versed in doing a DD conversion in our G's but I thought the thread was about BB or CC?

BTW, $300 for fronts, rears and sub/amp install is actually cheap for that amount of install given what they would have to do for all of that..... I would be a little suspicious of the quality of that install for only $300 IMO.

NO......I actually did a thread WITH PICTURES about this specific topic back in maybe Summer 2004. I don't know if the database on this website still has the thread or the pictures.

You could but it would look unprofessional b/c there would be little more than a 1/8" gap all the way around your HU. I guess you could fashion a trim piece but that would be a PITA. It would be simpler to just spend the $60-90 on a JDM DD dash trim piece.

Also, you would still have to order the v35 AC controller since the stock circuit board in the HVAC unit still incorporates both the radio and the AC controls all on 1 board. There has been several discussions about possible splicing the traces on the stock circuit board to separate the AC controller from the radio but that also would be a major PITA. I think someone actually did it and posted pictures on cardomain.com but it was absolutely ridiculous.

I wasn't disagreeing with you, Doc. I was pointing out that if some so called audio shops don't know what they're talking about, the box stores really won't.

Oh....lol

Here's a funny story. Went into a custom car audio store looking at stuff in 2005. I observed that they were working on a G35. Asked the guy if they did a lot of G35 work...DD conversions, replacing Bose amp and stock speakers. He told me "oh yeah....tons".

"Tough huh?" I ask him...already having done my DD conversion in 2004 and already having 12000+ hits on my DIY guide for 03-04 DD conversion that was posted over on www.g35-owners.com(?).

I happen to look on the front seat and what did I see? A copy of my DIY guide probably printed off from the website. "Hey, where did you get that and can I have a copy of that?" I ask the guy.

"uh...we cannot give out a copy, one of the guys here at the shop wrote this up ......" already knowing that was my hard work!

I walked out .... oh well, thats what I get for not copywriting the guide.....

now, if you look at the Metra instruction manual for their DD conversion kit, the instructions are basically step by step the same as mine! The reason why I know this is that there are some steps I included in my original DIY guide that I now know are uneccessary yet Metra somehow seemed to include these non-essential steps in their instruction manual....

it did make me mad for a little bit but you know what, life is too short to stress about something so trivial.

my consolation was that over the past 3 years, I (and definately others on here) have managed to help others with their DD conversion who have actually appreciated it....that's what's great about these forums...real people genuinely helping people.

same thing goes for the reasons why I practice medicine...not for personal recognition or gain, but to help others feel a little (or alot) better....
