free air subs
Hi guys, sorry if this has been covered... Tried searching and didn't find anything...
I'm a noob so I may have missed it......
Has anyone replaced their 6X9's on the rear deck of a coupe with free air 8" subs??
If so, what kind and how did it sound?
Thanks

I used to be an installer with circuit city and a private shop years ago and I always used free air subs with my stereos. I first used two Kicker comp 12s in a box, but when the car was broken into, I had to change it up so no one could steal my stuff again. I used dual free air subs and later a single Free air 12. Currently i have a free air 12 in the G35, but I like it somewhat, but i know it could sound better.
I too have thought to change out the rear 6x9s for two free air 8"s. But to be honest, I have found that the infinity basslink on ebay for less than $150 will be the best way to go cause it fits where a 4080 box would (to the side in the rear) and i could have no extra equipment in the trunk...
sorry for ramblin..anyone else on the free air 8"?

I had two major free air installs..the problem with them is that you have to spend some time finding the air leaks in between the trunk and the cabin...if there is a leak..they sound like muddy garbage as you put it...
but, if installed correctly, if leaks are sealed...I had two free air 12's put down 115db off a zr1000 amp in a cavalier z24...I even used one for a sound Q instal, and the owner was really pleased.
as with anything, if done RIGHT, it will sound good.
but like redlude97 said....i think for simplicity sakes...the basslink is the way to go. I have the free air 12 in my G right now, and a seperate amp...and i am looking on ebay for a basslink so i can simplify my install. and i like the idea of taking out for trips!

Thanks for the input guys. I am going to build a box for a pair of 10's that I had in my truck before and put quick connects on it so I can take it out when I hit the road with more than I can fit in the back seat.... I listened to a basslink -- in the store -- not in the car -- and since I already have the equipment I am going to just go ahead and use what I have, I think it will sound much better than what I can get out of the basslink with the old skool punch amp I had on them before..
On a different note... has anyone installed any Diamond Audio components in the doors?
I am going to change out the blose to some hex series 6.5's in the doors with a jl 300/4 and MB Quart 6.5's in the rear panels.
Diamond Audio is new to me but I am hearing good things so far..
Thanks again for all of the input.
