new head unit/DD

so my cd changer quit on me at 61,000 miles, lovely. The car is an '04 coupe with bose head unit and no nav.

anyways, I'm in the middle of molding gauges into the pocket where the nav should be, so everything is on my kitchen table. I figured I should just replace the changer, but now I'm thinking double din. Is what costs so much just the finisher? because I'm fiberglassing that and now would be the time to cut it out to make a new head unit fit.

What would i need to buy if I don't need the finisher? and how much does that usually cost? is it just wiring for the climate control?

Also, is there a common head unit used, and will steering wheel buttons still work?

Thanks

The expensive part is the AC controller.
