Re: serious subs
hey gone,
both are very good subs. You really can't go wrong with either one. It should really come down to what you like and what kind of music will be played most of the time. I really like an emphasis in the very low frequencies (25-35 hz).
As with any sub, install is the most important thing. I have heard both subs (I had the 12w7 in my sedan) but in different cars. There aren't enough of these around to get a test in the same type of car. With that said, I'm partial to the JL. Both sound very good but the JL can punish your kidneys in the very low frequencies that NO other sub I've heard can, including the ID MAX, or the Eclipse. The Infinity Perfect VQ comes closest in the lower end with even better sound quality but not much of a contest in SPL.
I just got a coupe and the 12w7 won't fit without taking out the spare. A 10w7 won't fit unless I take up the entire trunk so I'm going with the Infinity Perfect VQ 10". I was amazed at it's low end production. I think it actually sounds better than the w7 in terms of SQ. It definitely won't keep up in terms of all out SPL (where the JL stands above everyone else in SQL, which is a combination of SQ and SPL). But I would only use 90% of the 12w7's potential once in a blue moon anyway.
What's more important to you? SPL, SQ, or SQL?

Re: serious subs
for SPL, I would recommend neither. For all out SPL, you might consider the Kicker L7's I believe. They have decent SQ but they will take both the JL and Eclipse in terms of SPL. They always tend to do well at the drags.
Re: serious subs
i did have two 12 inch idq 's in my maxima which my brother drives now but i want to try something different
does anybody know what the cubic space is for the titaniums and the 12w7's and would it be possible to use that foam stuff to make the box seem bigger?

Re: serious subs
The IDMAX's are drastically different than your previous idq's. The Eclipse titaniums in my personal experience had problems keeping up with high SPL levels, and they're prone to blowing more than the competition. When I was competing, most of the db drag guys were running Kicker L7's, Earthquake subs, Crossfire, MTX 9000 something series (I forget exactly), or Digital Design Audio. If you are looking for SPL only and don't give a crap about sound quality, you should run the MTX or DD audio subs 9000 series. These are absolutely punishing, as I personally saw a guy with only 4 dd subs hit 170db's and had his front windshield shattered. The MTX are super loud too, but the sq is severely lacking. If you care about sound quality a lot while wanting spl (called sql), I recommend Earthquake, as their Magma subs are frequently used for db drag competitions while winning a few sound quality awards. If you want slightly more ouput, the kicker subs are then recommended, but they're not known for superb sound quality. People buy w7's because it has extremely good sound quality while also having good spl. However, seems like you arent really going for sq so you should overlook the w7's because of their price. I, personally, chose the IDMAX because I like their stuff, allowed for a free-air install, has very good sound quality and spl, and got the MAX for dirt cheap through some connections to them.
Yea and that foam stuff, or polyfill, will make the box seem bigger cuz the foam slows down the sound waves, fooling you into thinking the sub box can play lower than it actually can. However, don't go crazy and pack it like 10 pounds in a cubic foot, cuz that'll just harm your sound.

Re: serious subs
i think i really want sql so i'm trying to decide between the 12w7's and the titanium. i really appreciate all of the info because i'm learning more and more. i don't really want to blow my window open lol but it would be funny. it seems like eveybody likes the w7's but on the specs online for the excursion on the 12w7 is like 1.15 and on teh eclipse its 1.50. now wouldn't that mean that the eclipse move more air thus being louder. they are also a little easier on the wallet and they are a little more easier to power unlike the jl which are single voice coil at 3 ohms.

Re: serious subs
There are too many variables to answer your question. It will depend on how much power you're giving them, what kind of enclosure they are in, how they are oriented in the car, and whether they've been tuned correctly or not. Here, it is all about the install.
