Bad Head Unit

I have been experiencing a situation lately where I go to start my car and the battery is dead. I finally was capable of inspecting the problem today after a couple months of "trouble shooting". Previously I thought it was just the battery, replaced that. A few months later dead battery, got a new one under warranty. Then a couple weeks later (this week). Dead again? Fortunately one of my best friends owns a stereo shop and helped me diagnose the problem. He was getting a reading of 0.3 volts being drawn while the car was completely shut off. So after pulling 1 fuse at a time we found the Factory head unit was the culprit. My friend had the same problem with an FX he was working with at the shop, just that head unit shorted out completely. So I called and talked to the dealer and they said it's a common problem for 03 and 04 models. Just wanted to let people know.

Alohas!

they said it would be $400 for a re-fab plus labor. I think i'll just look into doing the double-din with an aftermarket if I decide to keep the car.

.3 volts?

how did he find how much volts was being drawn? you know, even if the car is turned off, it still uses the battery for the clock, trip miles, seat memory for some, etc...

if he is actually getting a significant AMP draw then thats when you know when you have a problem.

He actually took a reading with some voltage tool he has. The computer in the car supposedly has a relay system to every electronic component to minimize the current draw while the ignition is in the off position. As the head unit goes bad one of the first things to go wrong is that relay to the computer to shut down the voltage to the head unit. Yes, you are right about the alarm and clock being on a constant power supply but they also don't draw very much power unless the alarm has been activated. Needless to say if you leave your car parked for a week the battery shouldn't be dead.

BTW... My buddies shop is up there in Santa Barbara. Santa Barbara Audiowerks (805) 965-6076. If you wanna check it out just ask for James and mention the Krazy Hawaiian and tell him your from g35driver and I'll be sure he'll hook you up.
