Avic-N1 Install

Hey guys, I'm getting this thing installed on my G35 Sedan. Haven't gotten it back from the installer yet but decided to post some preliminary pictures. Check it out. This first picture is the placement of the unit before fiberglassing.

Re: Avic-N1 Install

This picture is of the airbox behind. Notice that the unit does not sit exactly flush. This was a compromise because in order to make the unit flush, it would have either cut off the airflow to the outside airvents (if the unit was sitting about horizontal) or it would have cut of airflow to the rear airvents (if the unit was angled down about 60 degrees). My installer told me that the unit has recommendations that it not be angled at more than 30 degrees (might affect some of the functionality). The final solution was to cut into some of the side airvent airbox behind to gain as much depth as possible without completely cutting of flow.

Re: Avic-N1 Install

is the deck gonna stick out that much??? WOW, that's almost...what....1-1.5 inches? Why not get the v35 dash parts and make it look more flush mounted? Hopfully, with screen always up, it won't look that protruding.....

ALso, hopefully, with the screen that high 1) you won't get too much glare during the daytime (I know the other LCDs had problems with glare mounted that high) Isn't the AVIC only ~400,000 pixels vs. Alpine and Eclipse's 1.2-1.4 million pixels?

And 2) with the screen mounted that high, you don't attract more attention from the cops. i think it's illegal in every state to having any moving picture on your dash while your driving whether it's a screensaver or system monitoring gauges on the LCD.

Good luck and be sure to post final pictures with the screen retracted and exposed, and how it looks like from the rear window and during the nighttime. I'm curious to see how much the deck actually sticks out of the dash.

So, with cutting some of the venting system, so you lose some of your AC flow????

Re: Avic-N1 Install

I considered the double-din. There were two main reasons. One I didn't want to screen mounted that low, and two, I didn't want to swap out the head unit. The double-din would have cost maybe a little less than fabricating this piece, but not really all that much less.

Re: Avic-N1 Install

I guess if the mounting position up there doesn't work out, you can always get the v35 parts and swap it out then. But, then is your AC to your outer vents all screwed up now that you cut into the venting back behind the mount and fabrication?

My question is why didn't you want to switch out the stock HU? You won't be using it huh with the AVIC? Unless you wanted to keep the tape deck! lol

Re: Avic-N1 Install

I guess that's true. I'll think about that later. I think the mounting position's gonna work out just fine. The outer AC vents work still. They had to cut into some of the airbox so I suppose the airflow might be hampered a bit but not cut off.

I really didn't want to switch the HU cause I wanted to keep the tape player (I listen to books on tape sometimes... Kinda dorky. I know). I also liked the in-dash six CD changer and didn't want to have to buy another one. Plus, I think the Bose sounds fine.

The install info I've seen on the double-din dash in the past mentioned replacing the AC controller with a japanese one and the install guide said something about losing the dual zone functionality. I've now found that that is not really the case. But in any case, I know I could've gotten the double dash but with all these other considerations and the fact that PAC is gonna come out with an Aux interface cable made me go this route. Don't think I would've saved too much money going the double-din route.

Re: Avic-N1 Install

I am going the double-din route... It costs about $400 for all of the parts. Plus around $100 for a decent install, so the double-dinners are actually paying $500 for the install.

How much did you pay Andrew, if you dont mind me asking?

Re: Avic-N1 Install

I just recently did my avic-n1 install. It sticks out of the dash by quite a lot!! I would say almost an inch or so. It's really noticable when you don't have anything in the lower din.

Tho, I did notice that there is about an inch or an inch and a quarter of space behind the avic-n1. So, for people that like it a lil more flush with the dash, can drill four more holes on the metal double-din harness and scoot the unit back by about half inch, i'd say. You wanna give it room to breath back there with those two fans.

Also, don't forget to connect the power antenna line and illumination line. without the power ant line, the glass antenna and amp doesn't kick in and without the illumination line, the avic-n1 doesn't go into nighttime display mode.

Re: Avic-N1 Install

Ah! Can you take a pic for us so we can see exactly how it looks like?

About the illumination line... where do you have to mount it? In front of the dash? Also, i heard that the stock antenna line doesnt fit into the pioneer.... is this correct?

Thanks!
