Re: Where to mount radar on windshield???

I've heard that in order to be as effective as possible, mount the RD as high as possible. I've seen people mount the RD close to the rear view mirror area.

Re: Where to mount radar on windshield???

I'm not sure if the location you're looking for exists in our car. I mount my V1 on the windshield just under the rearview mirror. It's never bothered me as far as obstructing my view goes, but I guess it IS in the way. V1 advises that you mount high, and since it needs to see out of the rear window, the spot I put it is probably as good as you're going to get unless you're looking at some sort of stealth install that require more than just plugging in the detector at the 12V source.

MrElussive,

Check out my install here:

Passport 8500 hard wire install

I mounted it behind the blue tint strip - can't be seen from the outside.

Re: Where to mount radar on windshield???

Got a rear view mount from a guy named Mike at www.my350z.com (search is down, but look in the Nav forum). However, there's been some discussion that the metal mount that Passport uses has changed with their new radars so the mount Mike produces doesn't work as well. Here's a pic of my install. Might hardwire it someday, but the dangling wire doesn't bother me.

I have mine attached to the far left of the passenger visor. There's about 1/2" gap between the visor and the top of the Bel Vector 985, and it's completely undetectable from the outside. To hide the cord I just took it under the CD case I have on the visor on it, hopped over to the door and tucked it into the rubber door lining. Runs all the way down even to the bottom of the glove box, under the glove box, and through the back of the glove where I still have the cheesy 12V plugged in. could use some guidance on connecting the wires internally. Not that adept at this stuff yet, and I'm not trying to steal anyone's cleverness as I know I'm not the first to hook up their's up this way and post it here.

MrE, if you don't want to do the hardwire install you can sort of do the same thing with a telephone coupler and a phone card. I have mine to the upper left of the rear view mirror behind the blue tint strip. I've tested it out and it's a little bit less sensitive and I think it's so high that the rear detector is blocked but it's damn near impossible to see.

I ran the cord from the top roof panel, down the A pillar, down the rubbing lining and the door sill, out under the floor mat, to the driver side cigarette lighter. Works great for me, doesn't obstruct the view and it's close to my ear so I can hear it over my radio.

Shot from the outside (see...actually you don't see):

Hope that helps!

Speedoholic, that looks great! Does the location (behind the tint strip) affect its performance at all? Escort says that any kind of tint will have an effect on the radar's detection performance (whether it's regular window tint or the more aggressive windshield tint strip). Also, that looks like a very high location...can you see the display from where it is mounted? And how is the rear detection performance??
Thanks a lot.

Stupid me, I should have taken pictures from the outside and from my eye level so you can judge for yourself. In any case, no, I haven't noticed any difference (I had it for a year on my previous car - 2K Maxima). Coverage is great. As a matter of fact, I went on a road trip yesterday and encountered something like 6-7 CHPs total. The Passport detected them all way a head of time - I wouldn't worry about coverage. Escort has to say something like that - it's a liability thing for them so they can cover their a$$es in case somebody tints his windows, gets a speeding ticket and then tries to hold escort responsible for it. I personally wouldn't worry about it. I'll take some pictures tonight so you can take a second look from a different angle.

MrElussive, tell me how you like the passport 8500 x50 when you get it. i plan on getting it too in a few months.
there's no difference between the blue and red models right? just color? price difference is alittle bit much just for the color.
